I visit Malta about three times a year and would love to be able to speak Maltese. I am pretty good with languages and speak a little bit of this fantastic language.

How can I learn Maltese in the UK?

Hi there! Kif inti?

I too am a frequent visitor to Malta and a lover of the language. I find it intriguing how Arabic and Sicilian mixed and evolved. Unfortunately, it is /very/ difficult to learn Maltese in the UK. It's a struggle to even find a dictionary without paying through the ear, and the only teach-yourself course is a very bad one, serving more as a grammar for those who know the language than a guide to actually learn it.

There are no signs of courses on the government's official website: the only link to a Maltese course in the entire UK being a link to a piece of (possibly dubious) software. which probably teaches only phrases.

The things that I can really suggest are:

* Try to find a Maltese friend on mylanguageexchange.com or a similar site. (Un)fortunately, Maltese people are generally very well-versed in English, so you may have to offer to teach them another language besides it.
* If you have time, there is an intensive, month long course (http://www.um.edu.mt/pressreleases/2007/eicl_mar07.html) upon which you could possibly enrol.

Best wishes,

C.s.

Wish I could help, but isn't Malta great? The only words I learned were bonju and ti-eb. Hope you find a place to learn it.
