What did it mean in Desprate Housewives after Andrew called Brea a stone cold ***** and she threw the wine bottle at the wall, then he said "I hate you!" and she said "The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference, and if you hate me, it means you still care."

Beautiful quote... but I didn't understand it. The first part I kind of get, but how can hating someone mean you care about them?

Well..hm...in order to love someone truly, you would have had to feel hate or anger. Just like for you to experience happiness, one has felt sadness..i guess it's that sorta thing. Indifference - is worse than saying you hate someone. Hate is said without thinking..people get mad just blunt out "i hate you!" when they're just temporatily pissed at you, and the situation. Indifference - means lack of emotion, motivation or enthusiasm..which is like giving up on everything, the whole ordeal. So yes, you can HATE someone and still care - it's like a spur of the moment hurtful thrashing word, as HATRED is considered an emotion that everyone in their lives will feel..hate can be based on fear or negative consequences dealing with who's directing that hate..and indifference is lacking the wanting to try anymore.

In the context of a marriage or relationship that was loving at one time, I can see how somebody may feel some sort of hate for the other person as a way of coping with the frustration and loss they are feeling when the relationship goes sour. If they are truly over it then they would simply have no feelings one way or the other and be in-different.

This was a quote from the great Elie Wiesel, but must be seen in proper context. Strictly speaking, the absence of something is not it's opposite. We can say the opposite of love is not anger, because hate and anger can mean very different things. We love our children and get angry when they do wrong, but we don't hate them. Indifference is absence, and we are often indifferent to other people's plights simply because we are ignorant of their suffering; it is impossible to be know all the suffering of everyone that ever lived. This is totally different from hate. Saying you hate a particular tribal people is different from saying you have not heard of such people and are thus necessarily indifferent to them.

Hate, with indifference right in between the two.

Because hate is a strong emotion. You don't have strong emotions about people that you don't care about. It's more hurtful to think that someone doesn't give a flip one way or the other about you than to know you get to them so much they experience a depth of emotions about you.

Indifference is neutral therefore it cannot be the opposite of love. Since love and hate are two the extremes of emotion they are logically opposites!
