We used to have a brand of sticky-tape called Durex.
That was a long time ago.
I'd say that's where the confusion came from.
A school teacher friend, an Australian, was working in England about 35 years ago.
She asked her class to get their Durex out for a project. The class erupted in giggles and laughter. Later another teacher explained to her that the kids would have thought she was referring to condoms. She was mortified.

Sellotape is a brand of sticky tape. Condoms are condoms. I have no idea what you are talking about, why would someone go to a chemist for sticky tape, isn't that what stationary stores are for.

Durex, which I understand is a name given to condoms in some barbaric areas, used to be a brand of sticky tape sold in Australia. I have not seen it for a long time.
