Does anybody realize that when the minimum wage goes up again soon, the servers' pay will go down that much? I wouldn't blame servers if they walk out at one time when it does. Since this society has shifted to a service economy, people should notice the unfairness if not illegality of it. How can service pay continue to support a service economy?

That's just it. Most are only getting 2.13 an hour before tips before the new minimum wage goes into effect. Then it'll be 1.43. I'm not a server, but this really concerns me.

You are right server pay will go down not up. Because most servers only break minimum wage as it is, people will not change their tipping habits to compensate for this. Most servers only get 6 to 10% on their daily sales. People just do not know how to tip and most are still shocked to know that we only make $2.13 per hour. That dollar they throw on the table after running up a $30.00 - $40.00 tab just does not cut it. But they think they are doing us a favor. I especially love the verbal tips. You know the ones who say "you were the best server we ever had. Thank you for the great experience." When you get those verbal tips, you know it means there will be no cash on the table.

Read Deborah Ginsberg's book called: Waiting. True confessions of a waitress. Or go see the movie by the same name.

Also read Barbara Eirenreich's book: Nikled and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America.

And to add insult to injury: the IRS is cracking down on servers!!!!

Me personally, after two years of trying to support myself on two to four dollars an hour and the occaisonal good tipper (extremely rare), I am having to file bankruptcy and forclose on my house.

Thanks for your concern.

Pwrgrlmanda: Work it for tips!!! You could give some customers a full body massage and a lap dance at the end of their meal and they will still just leave two or three dollars on a $50.00 check.

Increased gas prices means people have less to spend. They have to cut back somewhere. Restaurants raise their prices every year, and many customers feel they are already paying too much for the meal (really $2.95 for a glass of milk) they feel they don't have to pay for the service.

It is not that bad....if you want to make money you can.I was in the hospitality business for 10 years. This was the only way I paid my bills.I took my job seriously, showed up for work every day, called in ONCE in 10 years, but still went to talk to the manager....I tried to get the closing shift...because that is when you can make some $$$ when all the other staff wants to go home.I still had a lot of fun.But there were servers that I wondered why they even showed up....they always complained, took breaks, did not want tables....It is basically up to us to decide how much we want to make....the more you sell, the higher the bill, the bigger the tip.Yes,economy is getting worse....but people still go out! We have to be optimistic...with the right attitude...anything is possible. I enjoy the business and made a very good living out of it.

Not so much the pay, but customers will think they don't have to tip as much since they know the server is already getting more money. Sad, but true.
