k. abel would have been dead by then, but most believe cain took a wife from one of his own sisters, but there is always the possibility that evolution was going on outside the garden and had reached that stage.....

personally, I like the Native American view that there were many tribes, but only one (adam and eve's tribe) ever wrote down their history.

I had always heard the answer that the sons of Adam and Eve bore children with the (unmentioned) daughters of Adam and Eve, since there was not yet a proscription against "incest" as such. There was speculation that the obvious genetic difficulties of the offspring would not have existed yet, but I am not a geneticist, so that answer is something I cannot evaluate from that perspective. I'll leave it up to you to see if this makes sense.

Msboyd, it's useless to seek 'answers' from fundamentalist Christians. In any case, the Adam-and-Eve tale is unabashed fiction, obviously. Adam was not plucked out of the dust of the earth by an invisible god and Eve certainly did not emerge from the man's bloody rib. Does no one see how iffy such a claim is? Surely there are wiser ones at play here. It borders on the wacko to take such a tale as biblical truth.

Genesis 4:17 says, "Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch." Who was his wife? It is implied in the biblical text that Cain married one of his sisters. Several facts lead us to this conclusion.
First, it is clear that Adam and Eve had a number of children. Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." Since Adam and Eve were the first man and woman, and since God had commanded them (and their descendants) to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), it seems reasonable to conclude that Cain married one of his many sisters. It is also possible that he married a niece or even a grandniece.
One must keep in mind that in the early years of the human race there were no genetic defects that had yet developed as a result of the fall of man. By the time of Abraham, God had not yet declared this kind of marriage to be contrary to His will (see Genesis 20:12). Laws governing incest apparently did not become enacted until the time of Moses (Lev 18:7-17; 20:11,12,14,17,20,21). Hence, there was no prohibition regarding marrying a sister (or niece or grandniece) in the days of Cain.

I agree.

Adam and Eve are the first two people in a line of people that became the Hebrews. I don't necessarily see them as the first people, period. I am not so sure that the Bible ever meant that. It is just how some people choose to interpret it.

I asked this same question as a child back when I attended church.

It was explained to me that the story is merely the story of the first in the Holy Land and that there were simultaneously other "firsts" in many areas of the world.

Something still bothers me about that answer.

Please, read the book of Genesis again.Go to the first couple of chapters.
It says God created man, male and female created he them. This was on the sixth day.
If you will read down farther, you will see that on the eighth day,God saw that he needed someone to tend the garden, thats when he created Adam.

God created Adam and Eve. He probably created others as well.
That's why I stay out of this insane category, the non-sensical questions and inane answers.

There are many inconsistensies and contradictions in the Bible, not to mention scientific errors. You note one of dozens. I do not want to even hear the silly stuff believers will say to try to justify this error in their so-called holy book. It has many holes in logic, however.
