You don't if it is after the fact, they don't have a clue as to why you are angry, only that you are. If you start rubbing there nose in it or shoving their face in it they get the idea you want them to eat/drink it. You have to catch him in the act, say "NO" and whisk him outside. Is he neutered? If not he may be marking. You did not give the dogs age. If he is an adult use the 4 to 5 month rule.
the first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. good luck...

You don't discipline the dog for going in the house, a dog that voids in the home is not trained...so the HUMAN has to learn to housebreak the dog not discipline it. Do not yell at the dog, bury it's nose in it or beat the dog....these methods are antiquated and abusive. Doing something as distasteful as these can cause the dog to not just continue to void in the house but to also hide it so you don't hit it, yell, bury it's nose in it and that would be worse than the dog just going in the open.
The proper way to potty train a dog...
Whenever the dog is in the house and not crated put a body harness and leash on the dog, tie end of leash to your belt. Wherever you go the dog goes. When you see the dog start to signal (sniff/circle/scratch) that it's got to go than run the dog out to where you want it to go. Praise, reward (immediately) and use a command word consistently. When the dog shows it's learned to go outside consistently by dragging you to the outside than you can undo the leash from your belt. Keep the leash on the dog still and keep an eye on it whenever it is in the house and not crated so if it starts to make an accident you can grab the leash and run it outside. Once it is going outside with no attempted accidents for at least a week than you can take the leash off.
The most common mistake in potty training is giving the dog freedom to roam the house without supervision where the human doesn't see the dog signal it needs to go.
And if your dog is a puppy remember it only has an average hold time of 1 hour for every month of it's life until they reach 8-10 months or so and can hold overnight (usually).

Don't yell at him, especially using his name, and don' hit him. Best thing to do is if he did it while you weren't home or you were at work, you will have to make sure you take him out before you leave and when you get home. You could try confining him to the kitchen, say-or bathroom if it's big enough with a baby gate.
You didn't mention the breed of dog or what type of place you live in-apartment or home.
Most of all, don't get angry with the dog, he's not doing it on purpose. Like Cesar Milan, 'The Dog Whisperer' says, "There are no bad dogs, just humans". And this means that the human 'forgot' or neglected to do something to help their pet be more comfortable. This includes behavior.

Don't hit your dog with a newspaper or spray him in the face. That's mean and will only teach your dog to fear you. Your dog is LEARNING. You need to take your dog outside all the time and praise him for peeing outside. Then when he's inside you must watch him all the time or have him in a crate to disocurage accidents. If he has an accident and you catch him in the act, say "No" and then bring him immediately outside to finish. Then praise when he goes to the bathroom outside. If your dog has an accident and you don't catch him in the act, don't punish him. Your dog will have no idea why you are mad, even if you rub his nose in it (SOMETHING YOU SHOULD NEVER DO).
If your dog has an accident, it is your fault for not watching him or putting him in his crate. Try to do better next time.

First the things not to do:
Do not spank the dog. He cannot understand that this is for eliminating in the house and it may cause him to become aggressive.
Do not rub the dog's face in the evidence. He will have no clue why you are doing this; he has already forgotten the act.
Things to do:
Discipline the dog only when you catch him in the act.
Use the word "no."
Bring him outside often. Praise him everytime he eliminates.
If necessary, use a crate to train him. Take him out of it to go outside, to play, and to eat. Move it closer and closer to the door to outside. Most dogs will not eliminate where they sleep.

there is never a reason to dicipline a dog if they go in the house because it is your fault that they did. You have to walk your dog twice a day every day so that you two can bond and so the dog can relieve itself. keep your dog on a schedule as best as you can. my dog rarely goes in the house and if he does i know it's because i was being lazy and didn't take him out when i know he just ate 30 min ago. walk your dog as soon as you wake up and as soon as you get home 20 min each time. you will see a big difference.

Using a crate or large cage is very useful! Send the dog to the crate everytime it has an accident. Keep them locked up when you are not able to keep an eye on them. I did this for my golden retriever and it worked wonderfully. It's a great punishment since your denying them of their fav thing, you. Also never never rub their nose in their mess. This can damage their sense of smell and if done hard enough can cause sores that can become infected.

NEVER hit, "lightly swat", or strike your dog in any way. Especially when housetraining! This will create a dog who mistrusts you and who will continue to eliminate in the house.
YOU are the one who must be consistent - and take your dog out to his potty spot outside upon waking, after eating, and after playing. Bring a handful of amazing treats and reward your dog when he goes in the right spot.

Well, there are basically three kinds of dogs and three kinds of potty training. Dogs that hunt by smell like hounds, retrievers, and shepherds - follow Dan's advice. I have instructions below for dogs that hunt by sight like dobermans and danes. For small dogs, I' don't really know, but I'd recommend Pet Smarts school. My dogs really liked it and it helped a ton.
Show the dog the spot, then crate him directly in front of it. Let them watch you throw it in the back yard where it belongs, then give him a few minutes in the kennel or crate before you let him back out. No animal except the swine likes to be where they poo.
Beating him will give him an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality, and he'll search for ways to hide his business in the house when you're not looking. You'll find the surprise a few days later.
