The little boy I babysit is nonverbal - and he tries to use sign language with me but I'm not very good at it - it's only occasional, but I'm pretty sure I'll need it at some point. I learned from his mother that he has been asking me to drive him to the store, too bad I can't drive! He signed to me on Monday something that looked like he was making two fists and hitting them together, the thumbs facing together... if that makes sense. He was having a breakdown at the time... yeah. I need help with this one!

Since you want to know what he's saying by the signs, check out The Handshape Dictionary (I forget the exact title). It's arranged by handshape, and you'll be able to get the gist of what the child is saying. Go to Amazon.com and look for books on American Sign Language. There is a website, www.aslpro.com, that has short videos of the signs. Someone in my sign language class told me about it.

Also, try to find a class in your area because it helps to have someone actually showing you the signs and telling you about ASL grammar.

If you live in North America you might want to get a book such as:

"Essential ASL" (less than $10)
or
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Conversational Sign Language Illustrated" w/instructional DVD (for about $15)

The "Idiot's Guide" series is an OUTSTANDING series of books that give you the basics and an overview in easy to understand language. This one got nothing but 5 star reviews on Amazon (last time I looked.)

or some other self-education book.

If you live elsewhere, find a book related to the sign language used in your country.
