Many of the books (i.e. John, Mathew etc) were written after their death from their points of view...
Even the religious community seems unable to agree whether they are just ficticous moral stories or if they are infact true events.
If they are true events why do many people seem to expect the bible to be taken as the proof when it is a book? (i mean no disrespect but the bible IS a book)

Very interesting question!

I guess you could jump to the conclusion that Jesus was unable to write, but that's not likely. My guess is that he didn't write anything down because he had no intention of setting up a system of religion. He wanted people to be still and know God themselves and let this guide their actions.

The council that set up the New Testament in the 4th century had a whole bunch of gospels to chose from. They selected those which agreed with their preferences. But with no newspaper archives to go through, there's not much way we can prove any of the occurrences mentioned in any of the gospels. Jesus himself is mentioned briefly in a history from that era, but that doesn't prove any of the incidents of the gospels.

There are more testaments that were supposed to be in the new testament bible were not put there because catholic church officials only chose just those 4 books in order to make the gospel. However there are more that people are not aware of. There is a couple that just starting to come out here and there. There is the gospel according to Thomas however I have not read the book yet. The gospel was only chosen to convey an idea or a purpose to the people. I really think that was a shifty thing to do to the people seeing that we still do not have all of the information yet. Where are all the other testaments that were left out? They are still locked away in the catholic church where the pope it at.

Judging by His life as a carpenter's son, I'd say that although He was very wise, Jesus was probably not very well educated. However, the people who would later write many of his books probably had to write for their jobs, for instance Matthew the tax collector. And Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, started out as Saul, who was very wealthy and probably very well educated. God left the job of writing Jesus' story to those who were closest to him, but most, it is true, weren't written until after His ascencion to Heaven. I don't know the reason for this, but God has his ways. However, I am definitely sure that they are not fictional, though they are definitely from different points of view of the same story - the disciples were humans, not just characters. For instance, in the book of John, John indicates that he believes HE was closest and most trusted by Jesus. Many of the books, also, were letters preaching to different cities - they were found important enough to place in the Bible.
And 80% of Christianity is Faith, and it takes faith to believe the Bible's stories are true - I have plenty of friends who will question the Word, saying they're just parables given as an example, but he with faith will take what he hears for truth.

John 21:25, Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

The Bible is God's written Word to us.
It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit.

“Above all you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:20-21. (New International Version)

Yes the Bible is a book. So is the instruction manual you get with your cell phone. I bet you followed that book to the letter so you would know how to use your phone. The Bible is instruction on the best way to lead your life. Jesus Himself didn't write He had the apostles do it. Everything written in red are Jesus words. His followers also quoted Him after His death. I'm no scholar just a simple follower of Jesus. Simple is the key word. It's not as hard as the scoffers want you to think.

Three reasons: (not shouting, but I've studied this recently after seeing a Dead Sea scroll exhibit in Kansas City)

**** HE WAS ABOUT DOING MORE THAN SAYING ****

**** TRANSFERRING MESSAGES TO HARD COPY ON PAPYRUS IS QUITE TIME CONSUMING ****

**** HE WASN'T GOING TO TOOT HIS OWN HORN ****

He went quite a few places in the three years that he is most known for. He may have thought his efforts were best served working and helping people. He had the good judgement and foresight to know onlookers and his enterage would record the most important things later.

Also, he wasn't like his followers now days who are about condeming the less fortunate, driving a minivan with the fish on the back to the buffet at 12:01 p.m. on Sunday, passing judgement on everyone along the way, and raising sheltered, disturbed kids like Marilyn Manson. --- If he were alive today he would call those people Pharisees and Sadducees. He may have felt writing about himself would be a little on the self-righteous side.

People believe that the bible is (for the most part) the literal word of god. Obviously, there isn't any reason to believe such a thing. People believe the bible is true because their parents told them to.

As children, Christians were indoctrinated by their parents, with the beliefs that the bible is the infallable word of god. The children believe this; children always believe whatever their parents tell them. As a result, garbage such as religion is passed down through the centuries.

why isn't there an autobiography written by abraham lincoln? we know lincoln existed because of surviving documents. we also know that Christ existed because of archeological finds. many of these digs have uncovered parchments and potteries with dates, names of historical figures, and other information which should prove the accuracy of the Bible. by your argument then we should discount all history, because after all it is just written in a book.
also, no disrespect, but the latin word biblos means book. so, we christians are well aware that we are holding a "book" that is why we prefix it with "holy" so we understand it is God's book.
oh: and to mcbarry's comment that Jesus was just a carpenter. SO! 2 of the writers of the gospels were just fishermen, yet they were able to read and write.

If you ever actually read the Bible instead of listening to second hand comments, you would know the testimony of the authors was that they were providing eyewitness accounts:

"Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught."

Luke 1:1-4

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete."

I John 1:1-4

"We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."
II Peter 1:16-21

He was a little busy. He knew he had only 3 and a half years to do everything he had too. Lots of prophesies to fulfill, people to see and teach, promises to make. Not much time to take pen in hand. Best to do the job and leave the writing to others. He personally knew then all.
