For all the people who are in photography, where or how do you obtain photography industry information. I need some hard facts, market size all that good stuff..anyone have any great places or resources other than the library (trust me I've tried).

Photo District News is a good resource for general news - (online at www.pdnonline.com or at your newstand) but it is centered in NY - so it's coverage of mid America or the west coast or the south (particularly Texas - and to a lesser extent Atlanta) is not as full as I'd like.

ASMP the American Society of Media Photographers has members from all over and they may be able to fill in some gaps or point you in the right direction

The better trade magazines that will point you in the right direction are usually heavily biased toward commercial work done by ad agencies (as opposed to fine art or portrait/wedding) - and the best of these (which will have ads for creative resources, data bases you can buy into etc.) is Communication Arts. (www.commarts.com)

Before the web, (don't know about now...) Creative Access out of Chicago was a firm that maintained databases of art directors and art buyers. Photographers and illustrators would buy their lists - local, regional and national - for a direct mail list.

Regional film commissions (i.e., state agencies) typically have this sort of data as well as professional producers associations (there's one in Dallas for example)

Photography as a whole is the most over person-ed industry there is just take a look in the telephone book where you live or work and just think you will be competing with people who have gone to photography college and had years of experience. The ask your self are you willing to spend around £12.00.00 to equip your self with the basics to start trying to compete with pros who have probably invested three times that or more! Secondly Your choice of wedding photography at best its a dodgy thing to start with no training your taking pictures of somebodies very special day working under pressure to take picture that look good ! that hopefully will be better than those taken by family and friends who will have cameras that these days take good pictures. So yours have to be really extra special. The same tale goes for every part of the photography game! Now digital cameras are here to stay any tom dick or harriet thinks they are the dogs whiskers at taking pictures. sorry to disappoint but most never get Beyond being snaps!

In addition to websites like flickr and deviantart, which can plug you into local industry for the professional scene as well as what amateurs are doing, there are many publications like digital photo pro magazine and JPG magazine, that can help out a great deal. Their websites often link to professional photographers' websites, that can in turn link you to other industry related goings on. I take advantage of linking when doing research on the market myself from time to time, and though it can sometimes be tedious bouncing from site to site, the cool thing is that most photographers support one another in some form or fashion to share industry news and the like. Anyway, it's worth a try. If I could be of any help, feel free to email me.

Peace

Its not a be all end all. But there are some amazing Photography journals at the local newstand, bookstore etc. They would give you names and companies that you can then check out the figures for online.

If you are looking for statistical facts then the PMA International is going to be one of your best bets http://www.pmai.org/index.cfm/ci_id/1198/la_id/1.htm
However, the markets which they cover typically is that of the commercial photo industry and not fine art.

The two previous poster's suggestions are good- I'll just add PDN (Photo District News) to that list.
