My personal favourite full-feature AF body is the F80, which is smaller and lighter than most of the other AF film bodies. However, you cannot really go wrong with any of the consumer level film bodies from the mid-90s on. These are F70, F90, F60 and F80 and their variants.

The F100 is a semi-professional camera, and the F4 was the top end professional camera of its day (circa 1988). The F4 is heavy, but it is a brilliant camera to use if you can tolerate the weight.

Nikon digitals are not my forte. Others can advise you about that. My only advice would be don't get anything much more than a couple of years old if you are buying second-hand just because the technology is moving so quickly and the older bodies quickly become obsolescent.

Digital or film?

For film, get yourself a used F100. It's a good, solid pro quality camera that's not as big or heavy as an F5 or F6. Most used F100s are selling for well under $400.

You can get less expensive cameras, however for what film cameras are selling for these days, it seems pointless to me to buy anything less than the best.

Any of the older Nikon F series cameras(F2, F3, F4) would also be a great choice.

I'm sure others will give you suggestions for digital SLRs if that's what you're looking for.
