Hello everybody!

I'm very excited to say I will soon be getting a new puppy (I have a yellow lab right now). I'm a dog groomer, and have lots of experience with dogs and I just love them! I have a general idea of how I can potty train my future puppy, but I'd really like to hear some of your helpful opinions, and what worked best for you.

Thank you so much.

you will find that your puppy will need to go 10-20 minutes after eating you have to watch for signs the he/she needs to go sniffing around is a good clue. then take your pup out side to a place that you want it to go pick a word like hurry or what ever you prefer to us while the pup is going he will learn that this word mean you want him to go so eventually the pup will try to go on command.

You may want to get a doggie door, and train the puppy to use that. So, when it's little bladder is just overflowing, the pup can do it's business without any problems. The also make them very safe, that you can lock the doggie door when you are not home, and unlock it when you want the dog to be able to go out. I am a champion show handler, so I am used to many dogs, and right now I have to twin shar-pei puppies and they have never used the potty in the house their whole life. Contact me if you have anymore questions to be answered! Good Luck!

Crate training works wonders, it helps to keep your house clean, because the dog own't soil where it sleeps if it can help it. Start with a schedule, you will know after a few days what the frequency of your dogs need to go to the bathroom, usually right after waking and eating. It is recconmended that you take them outside right after you let them out of the crate because they will have to go, once they get to the place you want them to go, say the designated word(potty, buisness, etc.) and when they go, praise immensely and give a treat or two. We also put a bell on the door and rang it as we were going outside to go potty and she caught on within a week.
If you can't directly supervise the dog while you are home, leave her in the crate with plenty of toys and let them out every hour or so to play and go potty.

We had to start out on wee-wee pads (medical reasons and harsh winter weather) knowing that moving over to outside bathroom breaks would be more difficult... When puppy was 5 months we started crate-training him, and it took him about a month to fully understand the idea.

If I ever have another puppy, I'll go straight to crate-training, as it works on the principal that a dog won't soil his sleeping area. (Not to mention, so much cheaper than buying wee-wee pads!)

I read this sure-fire method in a dog book a few years ago:
After the puppy's meal, put it in an enclosure lined with newspaper, until he/she 'does his business'. Gradually move the enclosure towards the door, and make it smaller (but still comfortable). Eventually, move the paper outside, and put the puppy outside after its meal. It will associate the newspaper with its toilet. Then decrease the size of the newspaper over a few days, until it disappears altogether. The puppy will then associate going to the toilet with the outside area.

Set a designated potty area, and remember to take him out there after every meal, after naps, every morning, etc... set a schedule. Remember to say a command like "Go pee, or Hurry" Don't get discouraged if he makes a few accidents, he is only a baby after all. Good luck with your pup!
