"Temptation" is being human. It is wanting something. You can only overcome it by not being human. If you make yourself never want anything, you are pretty much dead. Of course, you're not meant to overcome it. You're just mean to feel guilty because of it.
You can't really control what you think. For example, just by typing the word "underwear", I just made you think about underwear. Religion tries to convince you that what you think can be a "sin" or "bad". This makes it really easy to get people to feel guilty throughout the day, because people really can't stop themselves from thinking about things. The more you can get them to feel guilty, the more they will think about and think they need religion, and the more likely they will fill the pews and empty their pockets.

It's every thing that tries to converse with your instincts to agree with them to cancel your mind.
HOW:
And you can overcome it by persuading your mind to get involved and have action by expelling these temptations.

but i see no reason to halt temptation as long as it breaks no laws! but if you need to break away from it, i suggest just try to be a very strong-willed person.
