Horror movies make money hand over fist.

We have a holiday that celebrates the macabre, and encourages fright.

There is even an argument (whether you choose to acknowledge it or not) that fear is what drives religion itself.

What is it about being frightened that we are so drawn to?

It is exciting. It gets the adrenaline flowing. Many of the symptoms are the same as those felt in lust and other emotions. It is very deeply imbedded into our psyche. It is also a great motivator, which makes it useful to religions and politicians.

It is the same thing that causes us to like roller coasters. It's the thrill; the adrenaline rush. Such things lift us up out of the ordinary and mundane. Horror movies temporarily make our lives vicariously exciting and it does take extreme elements to really do the job.

The uncertainty. Even in a roller coaster, you really don't know what it is like until you get on.

It is something different, a jolt to our entirely too complacent system. We need to get shocked out of our comfort zone - humans crave excitement, but rarely see it in their own lives.

I think the attraction is chemical. The adrenaline rush is intoxicating.
