it says here that one of the risk factors which associate with various form of cardiovascular diseases is periodontal (gum) disease. it is not clear for me, "why is that?". it is not even defined here. please answer this....

periodontal disease can release bacteria into the blood stream, in cases where there is a damaged heart this bacteria can lodge in the damaged portion and grow causing serious infection in the heart itself.

Streptococcus Mutans is the bacteria responsible for tooth decay - it can also infect and damage the cardiovascular system.
