1. Because He has essentially provided everything we have, we should thank Him.
2. It is advisable to ask Him to bless the food and help it strengthen our bodies.
This is helpful in that people will recognize what they are eating, how the food was acquired, the effort it took to prepare the food, and appreciate the food. This also helps people to recognize the importance of the food itself. When you eat and pray with people, it tends to bring peace and a feeling of comfort and togetherness. I find that it is a small way to teach children about appreciation of people and food. Maybe there would not be so many fat people if they stopped to thank God for what they are putting in their mouths.

It's just a time to reflect on the things we believe God has provided for us. I haven't prayed before meals in years, myself.

To thank God for blessing us with food - Because there are people out there without food - and to take away any sickness that can come in food - I it almost like thanking your mother for making you dinner !

It is just a good time to give thanks to God for everything you have. It fits in with all the other times you pray. No one is forced to do it.
