How do you make an image so that it becomes transparent at the edges. For example, I want to put an oval around a face and rather than just have it crop normally. I want it to fade to transparent at the edges.

Use the select area tool to draw an oval around your subject. Leave some extra room around the face. Then adjust the feathering, amount depends on the resolution of the image, to feather out the edge of the selection. Then invert the selection (control+shift+i) and delete. It may take you a few tries to get it right, because it depends so much on your image - but this way is quick and easy.

I think the easiest would be to use a layer mask...

select the area and then try the opacity thing ;)
