Maybe people were forced to follow those beliefs when they were children, they grew up in Christian families and weren't allowed to make the choice for themselves of what they believed. But once they became adults and were able to make informed choices on their own they chose to believe something else, and not just pressured into something cause of their family - whether that be Islamic, Atheism, etc.
Peoples friends could have an influence on them also and sometimes people decide that for whatever reason, what they had believed in didn't have a meaning in their life anymore but something else did.
In Australia, we had the national census last year and not long ago they finished compiling the information that it had. The number of Christians has reduced since the last census 5years earlier, as had the numbers of people who call themselves Catholic, Anglican, Uniting Church or Presbyterian has declined, while the no religion category has increased by 3%.

Good question. It might come as a surprise but the number of Christians are increasing. While there is a leveling off in the us, the third world, Korea, Vietnam, Africa, China, these Nations are exploding. You are correct about Islam increasing. the ones you mention about converting I have very serious doubts where ever born again Christians who have a relationship with Jesus Christ. You do not convert from the truth. You know as well as I do. They say there is a little over 6 billion people now, 1.26 Christians, 1.1 Muslims, the rest, Hindu, Buddest, or other or nothing. So yes Islam is raising but there are a lot who have nothing. As the time winds down you will see more and more "taking sides" this is good, it just shows that the end is closer than ever.

I lived in the US for 6 years and my wife is American convert.
From my experience,
Many Christians are not really following the Bible. They just believe that Jesus is the way to heaven and thats it. They have sex before marriage, they eat pork, some of them are gay, they don't go to church.
Also, they have some beliefs against Christianity like saying it is ok to be Gay.
In my 6 years I spent in the US,
I have only met one dedicated Christian who was Gay!! His explanation is that Jesus died for our sins, being Gay is a Sin that Jesus already paid for !!
So, in my personal opinion, the number is staying the same since there are may missionaries who go to poor countries and by using money, food, and medicine that people become Christians. At the same time, many Christians are becoming Athiests or converting to Islam.

Rather than worry about people leaving Christianity...take a good look at what Christianity has become.
http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0216-20.htm
"The Evangelical Christian right is working to insure a manmade apocalypse develops in the Middle east. This powerful political faction runs parallel to the economic foreign policies of the slightly more secular neo-conservative “republican” party which has visions of empire and military rule as outlined in the Project for a New American Century's "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century" [pdf format]. It was written a year before 9/11, and, prophetically, the plan to put bases throughout the Middle East is right on schedule. John Hagee’s latest book is Jerusalem Countdown which can be viewed on his website. Evidently, it presents Iran as a horrible nuclear threat to Israel and the United States. Just for a quick check with reality here is the score on nuclear weapons: Iran-0, Israel-200, US-10,600 (as of 2002)."

I don't know. But two things I do know and they are things to be thankful for. 1. christianity is the fastest growing religion in China, but the message is being doctored (ie some of it being held back eg the second coming) a bit so they need a lot of prayer HOWEVER many Chinese christians go to underground churches which teach the whole message. Pray for the strength of them and thank God for their leaders.
2. God promised that every tongue would confess that he is Lord. Everyone will get a chance to hear the Good News.
Maybe it would be an idea to reach out to the people in your community and try and do something for Christ and for them. Not trying to sound like i have a huge horse, am sitting on it and am in danger of hitting my head on the moon, but think and pray about how you can help. Theshowwithnoname might help (http://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/radio/podcasts/ look for theshowwithnoname it's near the bottom).

There are more Christians today than there has ever been, their numbers are on the rise. Many that left the Christian churches are returning to them.
The reports that there are Christian churches being closed are true but that is not because there are less Christians, but new churches are much bigger. And many of those being closed are because of people leaving those areas. Still a lot more Christians than ever before.

All the bronze-age religions are losing people. You used to swell your numbers by breeding, except education has progressed and now the children of christians will not by definition become christians.
I don't think there are masses of christians converting to muslim or the other way around. I do think there are more and more people who "don't really care about religion" or who are outright atheist or agnostic.

I too am a christian. Doubt that the numbers of Christians are going down that much, Christians don't support abortion. lol. I'm praying that the numbers of christians in this world are going up. I wish for everyone to be my brother or sister in christ. God Bless you, and good luck.
