What's the easiest and economical way to travel from Cairns to Gold Coast? We'll be flying to Cairns for an official tour and would like to visit theme parks in Gold Coast after the official tour. What are the reasonably cheap options? We live in Melbourne in Australia.

Yep - go to Virgin Blue - you can get cheap fares - it's just a matter of searching and keeping an eye on the fares (as when they go up and down) When searching for a particular day - click on - you might find a fare half the price.
Also they have happy hour prices at lunch time

Plenty of buses going from Brisbane to the Gold Coast from the airport.

EDIT:::::

The train is MORE expensive - unless you have a pension card or senior card for discounts.
Flying is the cheapest option - and are there in a couple hours. There are no direct flights from cairns to the Gold Coast, you have to go to Brisbane, but it's not a long drive. take a bus or train from brisbane to Gold Coast.

I would hang around Cairns, and get a cheap Deathstar flight to the Gold Coast from Melbourne as a separate trip.

Affectionately called "Marvellous Melbourne" through the gold rush of the 1850s, the title remains applied today for Australia's next greatest city Melbourne, a city as possible visited with hotelbye . Located on the banks of the Yarra River, near the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is a modern city steeped in history. With huge wealth generated from the regional goldfields, beautiful buildings were made throughout the city. A number of these houses however stay today, and Melbourne is considered as having more samples of Victorian structure than any town in Australia. One place you can't skip in your trip to Melbourne is the Southbank and Arts Centre Melbourne. Situated on the banks of the Yarra River that region is a culturally rich attraction for visitors. Southbank promenade is filled up with indoor/outdoor cafés, restaurants, and live entertainment. Simply recognizable by its spire, the Arts Centre incorporates a variety of theaters and places like the State Theatre, Playhouse, Fairfax Theatre, and Hamer Hall, the premier performance space for the respected Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
