to sexually stimulate themselves? I work at a daycare and a little girl does even after i've told her not to? She proceeds to lay on her stomach and rub herself against just about anything that would stimulate her. I know it's common for children to explore themselves but i don't remember being so "intuned" with my body until much later.

but i thought i might be acting too over-paranoid being i don't have any kids of my own to compare such behaviors

It wouldn't be unusual for infants and toddlers but 5 year olds no. To me these are huge red warning flags!

Hmm I don't remember sexually stimulating myself when I was about 5!! It could be that the 5 year old is developing slower than everyone else or maybe her parents spoil her so she does not know the difference between right and wrong. I reckon talking to the parents is a really good idea!

Sexual curiosity happens at all ages. My daughter is 5 and has been seen doing as such and is reminded that her hands, and no one else's, are to be in that area. Her hands should only be there to wipe after going potty and to clean in the tub, other than that, it's just not ok. Try explaining this to your 5 year old in question and she just might listen. Not sure where you live, but are you not required to attend classes and become certified before working in a day care, this should have been covered in your schooling.

This is kind of a touchy subject for many parents. First you should talk to the parents and make sure you don't have any suspicion of anything else going on in the home. My son is nearly 5 and quite enjoys touching himself. I remind him that only he can touch that spot (no one else) and that he should do it in private. He usually only does it in the bath. I think this is an age of great curiosity. They knew it "felt good" earlier in life, but now they have the understanding of "what" makes it feel good. I wouldn't discipline her or make her feel bad for what she's doing, just remind her that it shouldn't be done in public. We are sexual beings from the day we're born, it's just nature.

I know that little children are curious and that boys at that age can have erections but I have never heard of a little girl (or boy) doing that, it doesn't sound right to me, something more may be going on.

Might be doing it because she learned it gives her attention. This might turn into sex, and other things when she starts getting older, so definitly worth working out with her parents! You really need to tell the family what's going on.

I think by that age she would be doing it in private not in front of everyone - kids know by that age what private things are. I dont think thats normal.

She probably doesn't know what shes doing. Tell her parents however embarrassing it is for you, they need to know. This is so not right she needs help.
