The measurements in Kings 7:23-26 show the mathematical Pi to be equal to 3.00, not 3.14159.
Shouldn't those who take the Bible literally and infallible be arguing that Maths is wrong in expressing Pi as 3.14159?
I suppose you could say that it doesn't effect us as much as the whole creation story but surely the fact that the Bible is incorrect ono this one account, why wouldn't it be wrong on others?
So as a Biblical literalist, should you believe that Pi = 3?

Bookman: It's not exactly hard:
"He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape ... ten cubits from rim to rim ... line of thirty cubits to measure around it"
This is describing a circular form (ie: a circle) with a diameter of 10 cubits and a circumference of 30 cubits.
This is a technical impossibility as the circumference of a circle is always diameter x Pi (3.14159). Here, the circumference is diameter (10) x 3 so Pi is being described indirectly as exactly 3.00.
Does that help.

Brian: That would be you attacking me rather than answer the goddamn question.
I was using a commonly known approximation. And besides, you didn't even give the whole number. To 50 decimal places it's 3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510.

crystallinectar: I'm afraid I must argue that it says "circular" not simply "round". Circular implies an aactual circle, not an ellipse of an oval, etc.

Well, I have never sat and tried to pull math out of the Bible, I take it line upon line, verse upon verse.

Pi=3?? Oh manWhy did i wait untill i finished college to convert. This would've really help a lot in high school!!
By the way, pi is not = 3.14159, thats an aproximation because pi is not a rational number, pi has an infinite numbers of decimals after those five.
So we must conclude that pi=3 is also an aproximation, and that it is not a wrong one. Its simply not as exact as 3.14159 because (and you might be surprised when i say this) because the Bible is not a book about math

Pi=22/7. And I do not consider the bible infallible because it was written by humans.

If i lived 4,000 years ago, i would round pi off to 3 also. There would be no reason to have the .14159, if your nor building rocket ships or anything. Your reading into things a little too much. lol.

Pi = 3 seems about right since the bible is all pie in the sky anyway. If you are going to have a make-believe reality, you may as well have make-believe math as well.

1 Kings 7: 23-26
23And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about.
24And under the brim of it round about there were knops compassing it, ten in a cubit, compassing the sea round about: the knops were cast in two rows, when it was cast.
25It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea was set above upon them, and all their hinder parts were inward.
26And it was an hand breadth thick, and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies: it contained two thousand baths.
How do you get pi out of this?

You are WRONG Pi is not 3.14159. The correct number is 3.141592654. This is how silly you sound.
Why didn't you give us ALL of Pi? Why did YOU round it?
A rounded number is not a wrong number, it's merely a rounded number.

You need to understand that the Bible is an ancient book and it is not a science book. The measure is approximate.
