You can get cold sores from kissing some who has cold sores, but you can NOT get genital herpes.

Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).

Genital herpes on the other hand, are usually caused by HSV2, but they can also be caused by HSV1.

I have had genital herpes for 6 years. If I kiss someone I can't pass herpes to them because it only affects my genital area and not my lips and mouth. If I had cold sores though, and I kissed someone, then I could spread the virus to them by kissing them.

Yes. Cold sores are one form of herpes (herpes simplex 1), and you can get it by simply kissing someone on the lips.

They don't have to have an open sore on their lips, as the herpes virus lays dormant at times, and can be transmitted even though there are no apparent signs that the person is infected.

Yes.

How is herpes spread?

Herpes is spread by touching, kissing, and sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be passed from one partner to another and from one part of the body to another. Brief skin-to-skin contact is all that's needed to pass the virus. Because herpes may have no symptoms for years, sometimes it is very difficult to know who passed it to whom.

Herpes is most contagious when sores are open and "weeping" — until the scabs heal and fall off. But herpes can also be spread when no symptoms are present — most people get genital herpes from people with no symptoms. And most people with oral herpes were infected as children.

Mucous membranes of the mouth, vagina, penis, anus, and eyes can become infected with herpes easily. Skin can be infected if it is cut, chafed, or burned, or has a rash or other sores.

Herpes is a very common infection caused by two different but closely related viruses — herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both are easy to catch. They remain in the body for life, and can produce symptoms that come and go. Both forms of herpes can infect the oral area, the genital area, or both. When the infection is on or near the mouth, it is called oral herpes. Oral herpes is caused most often by HSV-1. When herpes infection is on or near the sex organs, it is called genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused most often by HSV-2.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

no for genital herpes. yes for herpes simplex (cold sores)

genital herpes is spread through sexual contact (any including oral)
so if you're having unprotected sex with an infected person, you could could catch it.

with oral sex-if you have sores in your mouth (even microscopic ones) you could also become infected

always use protection when having sexual contact with someone who is infected

for the cold sore type-any type of contact (kissing, touching the sore, sharing a drink, etc) can cause you to catch the virus.
