I went to the clinic to get tested and the doctor wanted to do a gyn exam on me. He said he would do a blood test for some stds but not for herpes.
Why can't I just have a blood test done?

nice attitude bmac. I need to "pay to play"?
Not that it is any of your business but my husband gets cold sores. I want to know if that is why I have issues down there. If you think that requires that I pay then you must have a very boring life.
There is no reason for me to test for any other stds. I just wanted to know if I have herpes too.

Too many doctors are unaware of the best way to test for herpes. They still think that doing a culture is the "gold standard". This is not the case. As long as you were exposed long enough for the antibodies to develop, a type specific blood test is the most accurate form of testing.
You need to find another doctor who has kept up with the advancements in herpes testing. Request the blood test be done, and if they refuse, get another doctor. There is no reason that you have to have a gyn exam for testing. There is also no reason to be in an active outbreak for testing. Culture testing is less accurate than the blood test anyway. Blood tests are really the way to go!

I've heard of doctors not testing patients for herpes because they aren't currently having an outbreak or showing signs of it.
Most doctors like to diagnose herpes by looking at the genital area (physical exam) and by taking fluid swab sample of fluid from the sores.
There is no reason why you can't get a blood test done for it though. I asked my doctor last year to test me for herpes through a blood test and it wasn't a problem.
You might want to consider switching doctors or getting a second opinion. There is no reason why you can take a blood test for herpes, especially because you are asking for it. They are there to help you and if you want a blood test done you should be able to have one done!
Good luck!

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?
But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

they typically only test for herpes if you have symptoms (they do a swab of one of the fluid in one of the blisters). usually you will have an outbreak within 2 weeks if you have contracted it. thus, they assume if you have it...you know. if you do not have symptoms you need to ask for the blood test. however, some insurance companies do not cover this so you have to pay for it, which means doctors don't think you automatically want it added in with the other tests that the ins. does cover.
also in reference to needing a gyn exam...they can only test for syphilis, HIV, and herpes with a blood test. gon. and chlamydia need to be tested for with swabs.

I guess you didn't want to be tested for ALL STDs, huh?
If you are going to play, then you will have to pay.
If you are having unprotected sex and think you could have herpes, then you could have other STDs, too. If you didn't want that doctor to do a gyn exam on you, then go to another doctor and have it done----soon.

it has to be done with a swab.theres no way of knowing though unless you have an outbreak but you need to be tested cos if youve got it and leave it you will be in hospital in severe pain.
