I've had 2. First one I had bleeding from the artery incision, into the pelvic cavity. Had to stay in hospital 2 nights. It stopped promptly but left me very black with bruising and very sore for 2 weeks. It's an uncommon complication. Second one went fine, they used a special plug made of collagen to close the artery, no pain afterwards at all. The procedure itself is no worries, I was sedated with Valium both times, but awake and aware. Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

I had an angiogram a couple of months ago and it was not difficult at all. They have new techniques to control bleeding, so they don't have to apply pressure to the tiny incision for nearly as long as they used to do. You do have to stay flat on your back for several hours afterwards which is uncomfortable if you have a back problem. They forgot to tell me that you can roll onto your side as long as you don't raise your head or bend or lift your leg.

If they go through the hip, you can't roll onto the pad covering that for a few days. Very painful.

If you are awake in the recovery room, you will not enjoy a 200 lb nurse leaning his whole body into your hip through his fist to help the incision close. 15 minutes, and they want you talk the whole time.

I was lucky to be unconscious 2 of 4 times for this.

If you are awake for the actual procedure, it can be very interesting. I was awake for the last one during which I watched the angioplasty.

Wear long warm socks. They cool the Operating Room.
