I need ideas for decorations, food, invitations etc...I want a bakery/sweet shop/cupcake/candy theme. Real sweet just like she is :) But more geared towards bakery items, not sooo much candy. Please help!

I was just invited to one of these! The invite I got was homemade and it looked like a cupcake that said "Our little cupcake is turning one! Come celebrate with us." At the party the mom had made cupcakes and had them set on a cupcake tree for serving. She also had make-your-own sundaes with the ice cream and then all sorts of different toppings set out in different bowls.

Let's get real here. You and everyone else knows that a 1-year old baby is too young to remember, let alone appreciate any kind of party.

You really mean you want to host a sweet-shop party for YOURSELF! Let's be honest.

And why on earth do you want to stuff your baby with all that sugar from pastries? Shesh. Just because Baby is real sweet - doesn't mean that stuffing her with cupcakes etc. is a good idea. Shesh.

OK you want ideas - Well, go to a good bakery and see what's available. Most good bakeries - even from the grocery store - have cupcakes, pastries, tartlets, small cakes etc.

Order these in advance so you'll have them fresh when you need them.

Go to a really good ice cream shoppe and buy vanilla frozen custard to serve with the cakes.

Use curling ribbon and confetti on a white linnen table cloth for decorations. You don't want anything too over the top because it will take away from the pastries.

Limit Baby to just part of 1 cupcake with most of the icing scraped off please - sugar shock babies cry all day the next day. No fun.

Keep the party to no more than 1 - 1-1/2 hours - too much raucus behavior will send baby to the moon - and she'll be fussy for hours. No fun.

Rule of thumb - the number of child guests should equal the age of the child - that is, a 5 year old child should invite 5 guests. Do the math - Baby will be 1. This means, honey, that you should NOT invite too many people - Your main objective is to take care of Baby - not be hostess to 60 people. If you want 60 guests - hire an au-paire to care for Baby.

That first answer was priceless! It's true your baby's first birthday is important to YOU, but likely there will be mostly adults there. Please make the party fun for them too. This means some hearty food to eat before all the sugar so everyone doesn't have headaches and your baby doesn't go haywire.

Decorating ideas...do you have a Pfaltzgraft outlet? They always have cute ice cream cone shaped dessert dishes on sale. I think you should stick with pastel colors. You can make little cellophane gift baggies with some pretty candy in it, like those little sugar dots on waxed paper. You stick a paper clip in a piece of Dots candy to hold each place card in place.
