Supermarkets and other shopping malls should adopt themselves to pack their mercandise is these Canvas/Jutte bags of the size suitable to the items shopped.
These bags when brought home along with your purchases can be recycled by you at the places where no shopping bags are given.
The biggest source of shopping bags in Canvas/Jute is India. They come in all sizes and very beautifully prints.
Printing on the bags will advertise for the Shopping Malls and Stores who have given them along with their mercandise.

It's easy to make your own. Purchase cotton duck from fabric stores. Measure the size of the bag you want and cut a rectangle from the fabric that is 2 times the height PLUS 4". Turn down 2" on each short end and sew it down for a lip. Sew up the sides.

Measure a length of fabric for a strap, double the desired width, and sew along the seam. Invert it, and sew to one edge of the lip of the bag. Finish the edges.

Now you have a cheap serviceable bag.

I just saw them at my local supermarket at the checkout stand for about $4, hanging right below the credit card reader. So now the question is paper, plastic or canvas!

I live in California and all of the grocery stores I've been in sell reusable canvas bags.

I've seen lots of cute canvas bags at steveandbarrys.com. I've also seen them for $5 at Trader Joe's.
