Animal cruelty laws don't apply for animals in slaughter houses because meat production is considered an industry. There are some bills that are trying to be passed now though to include factory farmed animals in these laws!

Years ago the small farmer had cows or chicken or a few pigs to raise so he could sell them and make a few dollars to support his family. Yes, I have seen the documentaries on the new, corporate animal farms, and they do disgust me. Not the fact that animals are considered food, but the fact that the laws allow these large companies to abuse these animals, and in that I have to agree with the vegans. Whereas the farmer cared very well for his animals, the profit-hungry companies (who, by the way are putting the small farmers on welfare) do not give a darn about anything except the Almighty dollar. Laws regarding animal farms should change. There are a sufficient number of smaller farmers that would then benefit, the companies can stuff it and a larger number of the population would breathe a sigh of relief to see that these animals are not further abused. We do not eat cats and dogs. But cows and sheep, chickens and pigs are not always considered pets, since their primary purpose is to feed the people. Sorry, honey. I love my pets, but I like a darn good steak now and again. Carolsandytoes1

For some sick reason livestock do not fall under animal cruelty laws. The FDA regulates humane slaughter proceedures but apparently they are not doing their job very well. What is worse is that around February they implimented the animal enterprise terrorist act that prevents whistle blowers from producing or releasing evidence against animal enterprises that would result in the loss of profits. This includes slaughter houses, animal labs, and animal entertainment agencies.

That's a good question. It doesn't make much sense that companies can scald chickens alive and slaughter cows while they're still conscious to make a profit, whereas these companies would be charged with felony cruelty to animals if they did the same things to cats or dogs. All animals feel pain and suffer, regardless of their species. It's sad that an animal has to be a cat or a dog in this society to get protection from extreme cruelty.

Well it is very wrong because an animal is an animal and regardless of what it is raised for it still feels, but many people believe that these are certain animals that are specifically born and raised to feed so they believe that it is useless to waste affection, time, and money on providing certain things to these animals that according to humans have no other purpose but to feed us. They do not see animals, but food. It is very wrong, and honestly does not make sense. Many people choose to even acknowledge these animals as even living beings because of their mass population and feel that it would not make sense to give these beings that are feeding us a proper amount of room to do crazy things such as stretch a wing or even crazier turn around! Isn't that ludicrous! Well you make an excellent point and i thank you for questioning "authority."

I could not give you a satifactory answer to your question, because I know what I have done in my garden. And that I know that I can use a similar vocabulary, used to describe what is happening to animals, to describe what that is, exactly.
Now I can sleep in peace knowing what people do to people.

It is true that animals are sometimes killed inhumanely in slaughter houses, but It's also true that there are places that they are killed humanely. It really depends on which slaughter house I suppose.

You are making a good questions. You have to see what constitutes a pet and waht constitutes a product, since animals at slaughter houses are considered products.

Its illegal to torture something, unless your making profit, just like its illegal to kill thousands of people, unless your a pharmaceutical company making profit.
And more than 90 percent of people aren't aware of either of these problems.
