Depends on the size but for an average size it takes about 8 minutes in the microwave and an hour at 400 degrees in a conventional oven.

You should bake a potato until the outside is golden brown and the inside is soft.
Note: If you do not purchase the right type of potato for baking they turn out like flour on the inside. You may find those type of potatoes are for mashing.

To start with, use a russet potato. 350 degrees, 1 hour. if you like the skin crisp oil it before baking. (I like butter) Most of the nutrition is in the skin.
This one I like take some "red skin" potato's medium size. Quarter them and place on a baking sheet. Add root veggies such as carrot, squish, peppers, onions. All about the same size as the spuds. Splash with melted butter or extra virgin olive oil. Season with salt pepper fresh rosemary and thyme. Bake in a mid-hot oven (425-450) for about 45 mins or when the veggies are nice and caramelized. LOVE IT!

Ohhh this question....the answer is always approximation...the way i would do it is to check it by poking the potato with something sharp such as a small knife. If it goes right through easily then i know for sure it is cook....otherwise there is no perfect correct answer to any potato
