Sometimes I come up with themes then I go from there. It really depends on how laid back your gathering is. Try to fix foods you can fix the night before or throw in the oven while your guest are there but at the same time do not over whelm yourself fixing food

Ex. a day the fair then I serve those foods they have at the fair

Finger foods are always good

Hot wings
Pasta salad

I've learned if it looks good they will eat it especially if they are having cocktails!

Don't know what type of get together but here are some ideas
Shrimp with avocado "Ceviche"
8oz coked peeled and deveined bay or other small shrimp(get the frozen pre-cooked type)thaw them or even warm them a little
1/2c refrigerated pico de gallo salsa
2tbs lime juice
2tbs finely chopped fresh cilantro
1avocado,diced
salt and ground pepper
In a medium bowl,combine shrimp,salsa,lime juice,and cilantro.Let stand for 5 to 10 min
Add avocado;toss to combine.season with salt and pepper
serve in clear glass bowls or martini glasses
double/triple ingd. for more servings
Individual lime cheesecakes
1pkg(8oz) cream cheese softened
1/2c sugar
3tbs bottled lime curd
6 graham cracker tart shells
lime slices,quartered
sugar
cool whip
in a medium bowl, beat cream cheese and the 1/2 c sugar with an electric mixer until creamy.Add lime curd;beat on low speed until just combined.
spoon mixture into tart shells. place tart shells on a small baking sheet, place in freezer for 10 min
meanwhile ,coat lime slice quarters with remaining sugar, shake off excess.Top each cheesecake with cool whip.garnish with sugared lime quarters and strips of lime zest.
You can fix these two along with the others that have answered you if you would like.I would not do the first one, if you are doing finger foods

You haven't indicated what kind of get together you're having, so I'm going to assume that its an evening of wine, beer, and appetizers! Here are some of my favorites:

1. Cheeses and crackers/artisan breads
2. Olive medley
3. Hot Artichoke Dips with Garlic/Cheese toasts
4. Vege platter with Ranch Dip (this looks great with the dip in a hollowed out bell pepper)
5. Meat tray: sopressata, black pepper salami, prosciutto, with marinated artichoke hearts and mushrooms.
6. Fruit kabobs with a yogurt cream cheese dipping sauce
7. Mini hot dogs in crescent roll wrappers

FOr a picnic like get together or something casual these are good ideas.
Good appetizers are: cheese and crackers tray, fresh fruit and dip, veggies and dip, taco dip with torilla chips, chicken wings and dip, little wienies in BBQ sauce or mini corn dogs with ranch for a dip :)
For the meal: hamburgers with an assortment of toppings laid out. Like sliced tomatoes, cheese, pickles, lettuce, sliced onion, relish, ketchup, mustard and BBQ sauce.
-Beer brats or Cheddarwurst.
-Mac and Cheese casserole (homemade is best!)
-Corn on the Cob, made on the grill (take the husk off, slather it with butter, wrap it it in alum. foil, grill for 30-40 mins and YUM!)
-Dessert - pie or cupcakes are nice because they won't melt outside like ice cream or cheesecakes, etc.
Good Luck!
