By going to this website and punching in an address, you can determine your "walk score". Essentially it is a ranking of your homes proximity to goods and services like food, schools, parks, and so forth. Mine was depressingly low.

I got a 63 - not too shabby. The main restaurant we eat at is less than a mile away, as is our grocery store.

The only things over a mile away were coffee shops and movie theaters (just slightly over a mile each), but we rarely go to movies or coffee shops. My wife makes a lot of coffee at home and we use Netflix. There's also a park and school (though we don't have kids) right down at the end of our street.

I also bike to work, but it doesn't give a bike score!

I knew it was going to be bad.

It would have been even worse before they built the new shopping center near my home. So development is good for the environment by that measure!

My downtown work location scores 85. I knew it was going to be good, because I frequently walk to lunch and there are numerous bus stops withing a block or two. But I live 13 miles from work and there are no bus stops closer than 5 miles from my home.

We managed a score of two (2) of 100.
I live in a bedroom community. (We're happily leaving as soon as the house sells!)
Many of the destinations were 1-1.3 miles away which is fine. The problem is that walking to them is dangerous because there are no sidewalks and the critical streets are busy, hilly, and curvy.
Go figure.

I live in the country 30 minutes drive from civilization so Mine is low too. I don't mind as I love the country and the peace and quiet.

40 out of 100

It seems to get a really good score you have to live in and urban area or in an apartment next to a shopping mall. I'll stick to the low score.

I think it's good to have a low walk score. I hate when they build stores close to my neighborhood.
