I always think it is fun to have a theme for my parties. I did a Chinese dinner party and an Italian dinner party that ( if I may brag a bit ) people still talk about. Pick your theme and start searching for decorations and recipes on the web.

I know it sounds tacky, but I like to go for a theme when I have parties. Not necessarily over the top, but some type of theme. For example a few weeks ago I had a shooter party. I served everything out of plastic shot glasses I found at a party store. I made a few different types of cocktails and put different garnishes out. I served shrimp coctail out of them. These went over really well. Shrimp in the bottm of the class with a little coctail sauce on top and a slice of lemon. I nestled the shot glasses in a pyrate dish full of crushed ice. I also served a gazpacho the same way. I thought that serving warm foods would be a little difficult, but it went over pretty well. I have an electic pancake pan, I put the pyrate baking dish on this and warm water. I ended up making chicken marsala bites, and sweedish meatballs. Finally I served small pieces of carrot and celery with a dollop of dip. It was great and clean-up was a breeze. For dessert I filled them 1/2 way with sorbet. Right before I was ready to serve them I filled them 1/4 of the way with champagne. Everyone loved it.
This is just one idea. You could choose a color, flavor, family tradition, nationality or even a holiday. I'm not Jewish, but I love passover food. I have done a passover dinner for a dinner party.

one thing i do is decide on a motif. this is MUCH more subtle than a theme, its a unifying idea behind the party that is subtly implied but never fully displayed for the guests.
for example: one dinner i decided on a 'fine art' theme. i served cocktails with van gogh vodka, had a slide show of my favorite paintings/sculptures on my TV screen and played an 'art' ice breaker:
on the bottom of each guests cup, i put a piece of masking tape and wrote either the name of a painting or the name of a painter. during the cocktail portion of the dinner party, guests had to find their painter/master piece (ex: someone with 'the kiss' on the bottom of their cup had to find the person who had 'Klimt' on the bottom of their cup). this is a GREAT way get good flow going through the party, especially if you're mixing friends from different social circles.
remember: the idea is to give you a unifying theme for YOU as you put your party together. it can be anything (in the past I've done: Paris, red, 1940's, sense of touch) that will let you subtly string together the different elements of your gathering. the key here is subtlety, no one should be able to say "that was a great [insert theme here] party!"
