I have recently decided to give up meat, but haven't really told anyone about it as my friends are big meat eaters, and I know that they will try and challenge me and make things difficult..
anyway I just had a few friends over for dinner and made pasta with vegetarian style-mince and tomato sauce.. and none of them realised!! I secretly think this is hilarious!!

I've done this many times. When ever my daughter has friends over and it's dinner time, they always seem to want hotdogs. I make them a veggie dog and they dont know the difference. I also make "chik'n" dishes using Quorn tenders and nobody ever knew it was not chicken.

I love doing this. With some of the more complicated things, like fake steak strips, they can tell the difference but still enjoy the taste, but ground "beef" and "chicken chunks" that are mixed into other food, they do total double-takes. "But...I thought you were vegan??"

We should be careful about allergies, though, and make sure they don't have any beforehand. Otherwise, someone with a severe soy allergy (for example) could bite into a tofu dog thinking it's real meat and become ill.
Edit: Er, ask a good deal beforehand, so they don't guess the surprise. :)

SHSHSH: The difference is in the reactions. Veg*ns would be horrified to accidentally eat meat, my meat-eating friends are delighted that I was able to fool them for half a second, and give them a delicious meal at the same time. And of course I wouldn't play this trick on someone unless I knew them well enough.

Well done! Check out stuff like this http://www.meat.org to keep you motivated. You won't regret it.

Meat subs are great, I rarely have them but I have had a vegan roast every day for the past four days because I can't get enough. They're fantastic. You should buy up and experiment with all the different kinds, you can get bacon and everything.

I'm not a big fan of Quorn (it's not vegan anyway), I have to say, but when I first went veg, I tried it, told my long-time veg boyfriend about it, and he loves the stuff. I love Amy's Texas Burger. I have a veggie ribs mix that's pretty good. And I recently found out about a German company, Viana, that makes the best faux "chickin" cutlets I have ever had.

I make my own seitan (wheat gluten) and have a blast veganizing meaty recipes.

If you like chili, crumble tempeh into it--it's awesome!

I am a bad, bad girl who loves her analogues. But hey, anything to make being vegan easier, right?

You shouldn't try to trick your friends. What if they told you they were serving tofu dogs, but really they had meat in them? You'd be upset, right? You just shouldn't mess with people's food. But maybe you didn't say and they just assumed and so that's pretty cool. I eat lots of meat substitutes and some are definitely better than others. I love the Quorn stuff!!!!!

the quorn stuff for sale in supermarkets isn't up to much, in my opinion
some south east asian restaurants use meat substitues which look and taste like the real thing so maybe find out who their suppliers are

Oh my Gosh that is HYSTERICAL and so awesome. Way to go. After a long time, once they know you are vegetarian and aren't hostile about it anymore, you can bring it up and knock them on their butt in a mini-argument saying they didn't even notice. It is all mind over matter - thanks for doing a cool experiement.

That's great!! Good for you!! I also am trying to become vegetarian. I'll try and cook something myself and see if my friends notice. Ha ha!
