Africa is a developing country, where people have little money, and there is very little health care.
They do not have in depth sex education as we do, and many people/children can not afford to attend school anyway, and do not get educated.
As it is a very poor country, some women have to take to prostitution in order to feed their families, many do not know about condoms or how to use them - so the virus gets passed on.
I watched a documentary a while ago about the spread of HIV/AIDS, it said the virus is spread from parts of Africa to other parts of Africa by men travelling from place to place for work, such as men delivering things by van, or fishermen sailing around the country. When they reach their destination they often stay overnight - very often having sex with women they meet there. Resulting in either the man infecting the woman with HIV/AIDS, or vise versa, and very often the men have wives/girlfriends back home - to whom the newly infected man will pass it onto when he returns home.
Some possible transmissions may arise because some men believe the myth that if they have sex with virgins they will be cured of various STD's - very often resulting in rape - which passes the virus on.
Additionally, the situation is more complex there than it is in the west because not only do people have HIV1, but the HIV2 virus exists there as well.

Because the Catholic Missionaries are spreading Catholicism in Africa and discouraging the use of condoms. More people in Africa could probably use condoms, but when you will go to Hell if you do, why would you disobey your Pope?
The people who suggest that AIDS/HIV spreads simply because of poverty, in my opinion, are mislead. There is tremendous poverty in South America, parts of Asia, in former Soviet states, Iraq, etc... and you don't hear about huge numbers in the population (50-80%) being HIV positive. It would be ignorant to believe that only people in Africa use sex as trade for something they need. It always happens in war zones. Do you see anything about a huge explosion of AIDS in Iraq? Was there an increase of STDs in the general population of Vietnam during the Vietnam war? Not that I know of, because the US GIs were all going to the same prostitutes for their fun. Many GIs get the clap from the same women.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic seems like a religious problem. Look at the way population growth is occurring in the US. It is projected that the Hispanic population is going to grow much faster than any other. Why? Because they are largely Catholic and therefore will go to Hell if they use condoms.
No religion = fewer STDs

To wonder is good, that's how things get invented.
Aids is synonymous with Africa because it started there. The living conditions now, the intelligence and the amount of education.
It was thought that the Green monkey, when eaten passed the AIDS virus that was harbored in the brain, to the people eating it. Now the theory is it's passed through eating the meat of the Chimpanzee from a certain area.
Passing AIDS through sex is a secondary way to pass the disease, actually through the bodily fluids, sex included.

Many people in Africa have aids because of rape and the mis-believe that if you have sex with a virgin the disease will leave them and go onto the virgin, and some where born with it and others just got it from sleeping around.

This is a work in progress-giving the knowledge and the empowerment to understand the disease to these people.
Some girls trade sex for a day in school or a meal in Africa-BAM-they're infected-they get pregnant and the child is born with HIV. Things like that.

From what I heard, alot of women get aids from sexual intercouse and bad habits. Then they become pregnant. They have a choice, feed their baby and give them aids (as in breast feed cuz they cannot afford food) or starve their baby. It's quite sad. What would you choose?
