An angiogram is a diagnostic procedure to evaluate arterial blood vessels. The term itself is not exclusive to any particular organ or anatomic distribution of vessels. For example, an angiogram of the coronary arteries is not the same anatomic distribution as an angiogram of the abdominal aorta or the lower extremities. An angiogram of the coronary arteries is, in layman terms, known as a heart catheterization.

An angioplasty is a procedure, generally performed through a catheter with specialized end or terminal instruments, to repair or otherwise perform work on an arterial vessel. Again, the term is not anatomically specific.

Coronary angiography and angioplasty are commonly performed together. The best example is a PCI or percutaneous coronary intervention performed on an individual having a myocardial infarction or "heart attack." The coronary vessels are accessed by guide wires and catheters through most commonly the femoral vessels in the groin or less commonly through the brachial vessels of the arms to visualize and identify obstruction(s). If the arterial disease meets certain criteria for angioplastic repair then additional catheters are fed to the affected vessel(s) and the obstruction(s) is dilated with a baloon (baloon angioplasty); a stent (a mesh type device to keep the vessel open) is then generally placed at the previously obstructed site to keep blood flowing.

A coronary angiogram is a xray procedure used to examine the arteries of the heart. This is done by an introducing sheath which is inserted into an arter usually in the groin or sometimes in an arm. A catheter is threaded through this to the part of the aorta near the heart, where the coronary arteries start. A special contrast medium is injected through the catheter, into your bloodstream. Xrays of the heart and coronary arters are then taken. The contrast in the bloodstream helps to highlight coronary arteries and the narrowings in them.

A coronary angioplasty is a procedure performed to relieve angina symptoms. A catheterwith a deflated balloon attached to the tip is passed into the coronary artery. The coronary angiogram is performed, and the balloon is positioned within the narrowed artery. The balloon is then inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wall, widening the artery and improving blood flow. A stent can also be inserted at this time.

There fore in laymans terms, you must do the coronary angiogram to look at the heart, and the angio plasty is improving the blood flow to your heart arteries by either compressing the plaque with a small balloon, or inserting a stent.

Good luck!

A procedure performed on the vessels in the heart is known as Coronary Angioplasty and Coronary Angiography. 'Angio' in Greek refers to blood vessel, and 'plasty' refers to process of forming. Angioplasty refers to formation or repair of the affected blood vessel. 'Gram' in Angiogram refers to a measure in Latin. So, Angiogram refers to analysis or record the condition of blood vessels.

Angiography:

Angiography or Coronary Angiogram is a process where X-rays are used to study the condition of blood vessels in the arms, chest, or head. Any obstruction of the blood vessels is identified, recorded and reported to the consulting doctor/specialist. Pregnant women and people with a history of asthma, kidney problems and diabetes are not considered for Angiogram.

The angiogram are performed by placing a catheter in an artery or vein to be reviewed. An iodine dye is injected into the artery, which allows an x-ray to view the exact site of any blockage or tear in an artery. The results from angiogram can be viewed on traditional x-ray films, and with new technology they can also be viewed as digital pictures.

Angioplasty:

An angioplasty is the procedure of opening any obstructed vessels with a balloon catheter, which is inflated to reopen the blocked vessel.

Angioplasty is not considered the proper treatment for someone who is suffering from multiple blocked vessels or arteries; instead doctors prefer to use open heart surgery. People who have suffered minor strokes and heart attacks are prime candidates for both procedures to be done.

Angioplasty is done with a catheter by entering it through the skin and into an artery in the general location of the blockage. At the end of the catheter is a small balloon which is inflated to stretch the artery back to its original size and push the blockage through. After the procedure is completed another angiogram is done to ensure that the blockage is cleared and that there are no other problems to address. Follow up appointments are needed to ensure the artery does not become blocked further down from the same fat that made the first one.

While the two procedures are similar in helping arterial and vessel blockages, they are different in what they do. An angiogram is finding the source of the problem, and an angioplasty is repairing and restoring the problem.

Summary

Angiogram are the medical recording and analysis of a potential blood vessel which is not working properly.

Angioplasty is the process of unblocking a clogged or blocked blood vessel or artery.

Angiogram are performed with a specialized x-ray machine and iodine, and an angioplasty is done with a balloon catheter.

Both procedures use a catheter to reach the site of any problem, however one injects iodine and the other has a balloon on the end.

As others have said, an angiogram is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that allows the doctor to view the inside of your arteries and larger vessels. He can see narrowing, blocking, aneurism and other problems that may not be detected in noninvasive procedures such as X-ray, CT Scan or ultrasound.

Angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure that can sometimes correct the problems found during an angiogram. Angioplasty is often performed during the angiogram. Stents may or may not be used in an angioplasty procedure.

An angiogram is just to take a look around to see what might be happening in the heart; an angioplasty is when they're actually going to DO something to the heart, generally to widen blood vessels.

angiogram - noun
An x-ray of one or more blood vessels produced by angiography and used in diagnosing pathological conditions.

angioplasty - noun, plural -ties.
Surgery to repair a blood vessel, as by inserting a balloon-tipped catheter to unclog it or by replacing part of the vessel with either a piece of the patient's own tissue or a prosthetic device: coronary angioplasty is to widen an artery blocked by plaque.

In an angiogram they are only looking at the vessels of the heart but no intervention is made. In Angioplasty intervention is made to correct a blockage.
