Both potatoes and onions grow underground and then sprout, but the main differences are that an onion has layers and layers of skin, and then the onion itself is tart.
Where as a potato has a single layer of skin, and it's starchy.
The best way to tell is to eat them though :)

Potato is mostly starch and onion is full of aromatic compounds. Some people can't stand the smell of onions or digest them.
