Do you mean like this person? ::

I'm a vegetarian who uses dairy products; I try to avoid eggs as much as possible.

I try to avoid animal products in other things as much as possible, but I'm not perfect with that, sometimes my wife buys me leather shoes and belts and I don't make a big deal out of it.

I don't think it's going too far at all, but I think it's very difficult to acomplish. If I went vegan I don't see how I could eat in restaurants anymore--I live in the Midwest and there just aren't that many choices.

No. It is an individuals right to choose for themselves whether they want to use any animal products; but they should also maintain respect for others who do not chose the same path, and not adopt a "holier than thou" attitude....
People should not be so judgemental; and I do not mean just vegans or meateaters or the religious or naturalists or wasteful people or frugalists or people who drive cars or people who take the bus or walkers or electricity consumers or people who live in the dark or ... OK I'm being silly :D , but Not!

NO.

I am a vegetarian and I applaud all vegans. But seriously, what vegetarian (who is in their right mind) would think that a vegan is "going too far"? We have to hear about that all the time from meat-eaters.

No, they do not go to far. They are doing with what they believe is right and is best for their health. I really respect those who are vegan because they take the time to avoid all animal products, something not everyone can do.

I think it's an admirable way to live, since meat isn't the only product that involves suffering.. take the egg industry for example ( http://www.eggindustry.com/ ). As long as someone doesn't try to be the "vegan police" and make veganism into a purity thing (rather than a way to reduce suffering), it's a good thing.

Having been a vegetarian for almost five years, I applaud those who take the next step and are able to plan their entire diet consisting of foods without dairy and eggs, and I don't think that believing animals don't deserve to be exploited by us when we can survive perfectly fine without them, constitutes as "going too far."

Nope.
I think vegans are wonderful, and I hope to one day be as good at removing cruelty from my life as they are.
Also, they help me to remember that I can always do more to match my actions with my beliefs, and none of them have ever made me feel inferior or demanded I change now or or be considered a crappy person.
:)
