It probably varies a little by region, but I would guess that Italian and Mexican (more correctly Tex-Mex) would be at the top, if we don't count fast food burger type places. The generic "American casual" (think Applebees, TGIFridays, etc.) has to be up there as well. Indian/Curry is pretty far down the list of preferred USA cuisine.

I would say Italian, Mexican & Chinese.
Most Americans have tried these cuisines & are familiar with them. Even making them at home is not a huge ordeal.
Americans based in larger cities have more exposure to other cuisines (Thai, Indian, Japanese, Malay....). Alot of small towns & cities dont have these restaurants, but more than likely will have at least have one Italian, Mexican & Chinese place (I cant guarantee the authenticity) but these 3 cuisines most Americans have eaten & are familar with.

Keeping it strict to the question our most popular food must be hamburgers(based on # sold). The gross examples from SMAK-Donald's sells wildly. But good examples do exists.
I would then go with pizza. Especially if the popularity is now a judgment and not sales numbers.

We have number wise more Pizza restaurants then any other type of food establishment...followed by Mexican food....we do have a large latino population which makes for lots of great latino food in general:)

I moved here (northeast) about 3-4 years ago... n this is what I noticed :D
