You get it from unprotected sex. It spreads through bacteria. And yes if it goes untreated or you get it repeatedly it could lead to pelvic inflamatory disease and could damage your reproductive organs.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that is transmitted only by sexual contact. It cannot live very long on objects such as a toilet seat, so catching the organism that way is very unlikely. As far as pregnancy goes, it may make is more difficult to become pregnant because the vagina and cervix will become inflamed making the environment hostile to sperm. I'm not aware if it causes infertility. I kind of doubt it. I work in a hospital laboratory as a medical technologist. I see these things swimming around in urine samples and wet preps from vaginal swabs every now and then. The disease is common so be careful.

Trichomoniasis is spread through unprotected sexual activity including mutual masturbation and the sharing of sex toys. While it is theoretically possible for transmission to occur outside of this mode, it is very rare.

If the main mode of transmission (the most common way to become infected) is through sexual activity they are considered Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Trich. infections can increase the likelihood of acquiring ot transmitting HIV.

Trich can occur in conjunction with other STIs (chlam, gon, syph, HIV, and Hep B. While trichomonas vaginalis can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and therefore risk of chronic pain, ectopic pregnancies, and tube damage (infertility) it is RARE for trich to be the cause of PID. PID complications as mentioned previously are directly linked to the number of PID epsiodes..the more PID, the more likely to experience the complications

In pregnancy however, trich infections may increase the risk of pre-term delivery and low birth weight

Hope this helps
