Pros: better health, easier weight loss, clearer conscience, not paying for torture, a more varied and tasty diet, many more

Cons: Ignorant people will tell you "facts" about how you're going to die from lack of protein, or how we were "made to eat meat". Ugh.

Depends on your outlook more than anything. .

Pro (for me):
I don't like the idea of killing or eating animals, so I don't do it. Also it's not necessary to eat meat for health. When I first became vegetarian I lost a lot of weight and I felt better. I have gained weight since then, but a lot of people do when they are 50. Generally, I feel good about taking a stand on something I believe in. I think it has some health benefits==my cholesterol is very low.

Con (for me)
Just one small thing. Some folks think it's odd or unhealthy or unAmerican or whatever and they just won't shut the Hell up. However, the only time I ever experience people like that is here on Yahoo Answers. I used to hear stuff like that in real life, but hasn't happened in years. So it's not a big deal. I actually enjoy arguing with the meat eaters here. I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't get a kick out of it.

I know a lot of meat eaters are in denial, but USDA and the American Dietetic Association both acknowledge that a vegetarian diet can be a healthy choice and "getting enough protein" and so is not hard as some people think. That person who answered before me is spouting misinformation. My wife is a Licensed Dietitian with a Masters Degree in Nutrition, she's also a vegetarian since birth. Other people pretend to be authorities on nutrition but my wife is a real authority; and it's backed up by the ADA and AMA. I hate to harp about that, but I just get tired of all that misinformation about vegetarianism.

The only cons I can think of are if you're used to eating meat, it might be a little difficult to cut it all out. It's also hard sometimes when you're at a restaurant looking for vegetarian options (imagine being a vegan--eatin' ain't easy! haha).

But the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The pros are endless. The cons are few and far between. :)

Personally...

The pros: I don't like the taste of meat, and I always used to feel gross after having eaten it, so I don't have to deal with that anymore. I'm not eating meat from animals that were pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics, I get way more nutrients, and being a veg makes me think twice about what I'm putting into my body. It's healthier for me.

The cons: I get called a tree-hugger a lot, and people make fun of me, and tell me to "eat real food." Oh well.

Live longer, vegetarians and vegans live on average 6-10 years longer. Help prevent the major diseases affecting our nation today - heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, depression. Love life! Feel better than ever!

No cons. You feel so awesome when you're vegan, so happy, you love life! There are TONS of restaurants offering vegan and vegetarian options these days due to the overwhelming demand that it's super easy!!!

Cheers!

Pros - a more healthful and earth-friendly diet, less fat and bad cholesterol, more fiber and vitamins

Cons - can be hard to find a meat-free meal when you are dining out. Also, vegetarians are more likely to suffer from anemia due to lower iron intake.
