People are vegetarians for a host of different reasons. It is environmentally sound...a grain based diet not only could solve world hunger but also dramatically reduces the effects of global warming. Being veggie reduces cross contamination in the kitchen so veggies are less prone to food poisoning. It is a much healthier way to eat...vegetarians have far less cancer overall than meat eaters and their colons aren't clogged up with disgusting wads of undigested meat. It also reduces the amount of extra and unnecesary hormones and toxins taken in through diet. Animal protien isn't really all that digestable. Cattle raising ruins the land they are raised on...crops cannot be grown on cattle fields. Chicken processing has a part in it they call the "fecal bath" where the chicken meat is drenched in chicken poo that cannot be sufficiently rinsed off no matter how much it is cleaned. Oh yeah there is always the crulety to animals thing..do you know how veal is grown or what the reality of a slaughterhouse looks like? Pulling a long piece of gristle out of your teeth is gross. I could go on and on. To sum up...keep eating meat if you would like to be full of cancer, have a clogged colon, eat food bathed in poo, ruin the land, cause starvation and kill the earth. Personally I can't think of a good reason NOT to be vegetarian.

I am not a vegetarian but I do have friends that are. There are many different reasons they give for avoiding meat or animal products. Some say meat just grosses them out. This might be because they're concerned about the animal losing it's life or just they don't like looking at the carcasses or raw meat in general or they've seen violence done to animals that wasn't necessary. That was one of the concerns with a book cover I had made and test marketed- it had "raw" steak on it instead of cooked. Some people are so far removed from the actual food chain I think they've become too "civilized". There is another group the believes that we didn't eat meat in the Garden of Eden so we shouldn't eat meat now. Some believe we won't eat meat in the millenial period following Christ's return to the earth- if the lion and the lamb are lying down together at peace then perhaps we too will be herbivores.

My parents are meat eaters, but I've been a strict vegetarian since childhood because as soon as I was old enough to understand that meat came from animals, I refused to eat it. I'm not a preacher, I've just always loved animals. I think that each person has the right to determine their own values, beliefs and ways of life. For me though, the thing that is most "wrong" about the way our society consumes meat is not so much the fact that animals are being eaten, but the quality of life (lack thereof) that the animals are subjected to. The idea of eating something that was bred to be slaughtered (and treated inhumanely) is not appealing to me.

I am vegetarian because I believe life is sacred. I don't like the idea of killing animals. How long it took to die or how it died isn't particularly important to me. I prefer not to take a life if I can avoid it.
Animals kill other animals for food because that is their natural behavior. I don't believe killing animals is necessary or natural for human beings to live.
I used to eat meat, and I didn't feel good about it. Now that I don't, I feel more comfortable with myself.

for lots of different reasons. some people stop eating meat because they don't like the taste or how they feel, physically, after eating meat. some people take the ethical stance, and won't eat meat out of protest for the cruelty of the animals slaughtered. for some, it is a combination of both.

There are so many reasons. The biggest is usually for the well-being of animals and the environment. Most of us do not want our money going to an industry that tortures and kills billions of creatures each year. And one that, by virtue of using so much agricultural land for livestock, deepen the problem of hunger worldwide.
Then there's health, methane emissions, spread of diseases, etc, etc, etc. There are so many reasons not to eat meat, what are your reasons for it?

For some it might be part of their belief or religion. Mostly though is because they don't approve of animals being killed or harmed in the process.

Animal rights, health benefits, etc. Vegetarianism is a lifestyle, kind of a moral code.
