Unfortunately, I can't go to a health food store. If you had one suggestion for something good I could pick up at a normal grocers, what would it be? I am not picky and willing to experiement because I trust the opinions of many of you.

Some of my vegan essentials I get from the regular grocery store are:

Avocados
Silk Omega 3 soy milk
Silk Vanilla coffee creamer
Kashi Cinnamon Harvest shredded wheat cereal
Rudi's whole wheat bread (it is vegan!)
Pakers Farm Peanut Butter (in the refridgerated section)
Cashews
Amy's black bean burrito
Pickles!
Amy's Green Goddess salad dressing
Endangered Species dark chocolate bar

I hope that gives you some new options.
Two things that make life as a vegan more fun are Veganaise (if you like mayo you will love this stuff) and Earth Balance butter. Both of the these items are generally found at health food stores only so when you go stock up!

I love hummus (great source of protien and flavor) sandwhiches. Most grocery stores have hummus. My favorite is spreading pita bread with some hummus, then cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts, and soy cheese (no milk). You can put what ever veggies you want in there. There so good, quick and easy. Even portable for lunches. Beans, tofu, brown rice and fresh fruits and veggies are you really need.

Morningstar meatless meats (they really help when you crave chicken nuggets or a burger), silken tofu, soymilk, hummus, different kinds of beans, grains (like rice, or my fav couscous), and finally..... LOTS of fruits and veggies! When you're vegan, you can get off a lot of the processed foods by eating fruits and veggies, and they're so much better for you anyway.

I could tell you what some usual groceries that I buy are...
hmmm
----Vanilla soy milk
----cereal (I'm addicted to shredded wheat)
----Beans (lots of them, the canned ones are like 59cents here)
----Veggies (Some usual things are spinach, radishes, tomatoes, carrots, asparagus, basically whatever I'm in the mood for that week. Lately I've been liking alfalfa sprouts)
----Fruits... always apples...
----Sugar in the raw (when it goes on sale...it usually lasts me a while)
----Soy yogurt(silk)
----Peanut Butter
----Juice
---- Coffee
---- These vegan soups(I don't know if you've ever heard of them, I think they're called Thai Kitchen by Simply Asia) When they are on sale.
----Brown rice
----pasta (whole wheat when it's on sale)
----olive oil (when I need it)
---- PEASSSSS yumm...
----Frozen veggies are easy and cheap
I usually get my tofu from an asian supermarket(cheaper)

I can't think of anything else right now... but I hope that helped:]

Tofu is pretty useful as a meat substitute. You have to season it a lot or else it's really bland, but you can grind it up and put it in a lot of things to replace meat (like lasagna or pasta sauce). You can find a ton of recipes online.

Organic Peanut Butter - a staple.

Just thought I'd add that in, you can use it for a variety of things and I thik everyone should have a jar or two.
