When I asked why I should stop eating meat, someone told me "By turning your back you're saying yes" to all the cruelty and suffering that animals have to endure. I couldn't sleep at night knowing I was contributing to such horror, plus meat always kind of grossed me out anyway, so I made a vow that I'd never eat meat again. It's been 4 years now and I feel great!
Plus vegetarians save around 100 lives a year EACH!

Some choose to be vegetarians for the social awareness issues, some choose it because their bodies do not tolerate meat well, some choose it for the other health benefits, and still other choose it for a combination of these reasons.
My wife and I are meat eaters, but our 18 year old daughter has been a vegetarian for a little over 3 years ago. Her turning vegetarian came after she took her health class her freshman year of high school after they did there unit on the meat industry. Her change was made for social awareness issues. My wife and I did not try to dissuade her from becoming vegetarian, we just insisted that she research it first and then tell us what were going to be her sources of protein. We support her in her decision to become a vegetarian.
Even though my wife and I still eat meat, we find that we are eating better because of our daughter being a vegetarian. We have cut back on the amount of meat we eat and even have two or three completely vegetarian meals a week.

I chose it for a lot of reasons. Vegetarianism is healthy; vegetarians live longer and have lower instances of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, certain kinds of cancer, diabetes, etc. I can find all the nutrition I need without having to support factory farming, which is an industry not only of torture and death, but of environmental pollution as well. And at the end of the day, I just don't think the best way to sustain life is to consume death.

why would someone choose to be a carnivore??
I've been a vegetarian since i was 6-when i was little, i would gag while I tried to eat a hot dog, thinking of the cruelty that was caused just so i could eat that. I haven't eaten meat for years, and I feel great! It's an overall better lifestyle.

I think the real question is why wouldn't you be vegetarian? I've been veg for a year, and it's the best thing that's happened to me. The vegetarian lifestyle is much healthier than what is considered to be an average American lifestyle, it's better for the environment because we don't have to waste resources like fresh water and grains on livestock when it could go to people in poor countries who are starving, and it's for the animals. They're living creatures! And when you're veg, you are exposed to things you never would've eaten before. Before I made my decision, I never would've thought about eating tofu, miso soup, couscous, or just about any of the foods I eat now. (And it's all quite tasty!)
Soo... now that I'm finished with my rant, it's just overall better. Thanks for asking. :-)

I chose to be a vegetarian because I was tired of the low-grade, high-fat, full-of-additives meat served everywhere. When I quit eating that crap, I quit eating the crap that usually came with it - like soda and fries - and lost 8 pounds without even trying.
Also, my periods are lighter and my cramps aren't as bad, since I'm not eating all the hormones they pump into meat.
If the day comes I need to eat meat (like when I'm pregnant) I'll only eat organic, local meat.

Why would an omnivore not want to eat a dog that was tortured and inhumanely killed?
Answer that, and you'll basically be answering your question about vegetarians. Oh, unless you're just one of those out there that likes eating dogs, then I guess this wouldn't work on you.

I was a vegetarian for a while, I did it for health reasons. I just felt better.
I still prefer some dishes vegetarian, like sandwiches and pasta dishes, but I enjoy meat in moderation too.
