I already have one rectangular sleeping bag. I want to buy another one, so that I can zip the two together and have a great big bag. I've read web sites that say that is only possible if you have one right-zippered bag and one left-zippered bag. What are they talking about? How can you tell the difference? If the zipper is on the right, and you flip the bag over it would be on the left, so I don't get it.

If you have a rectangular bag and get another rectangular bag it doesn't matter (make sure the zippers match though, they come in different sizes).

It matters more if you have two semi rectangular or mummy sleeping bags. These bags have a definite 'front' and 'back' with the back forming a 'hood' to keep the head warm. If you zip two same zipper sided bags together one will be upside down and the 'hood' will be in one persons face.

It asks you that because there are some bags that may be longer than the other, and you might not be able to match it up properly.

If you are using two rectangular bags, you would need to have two bags that unzip all the way and then they would zip right together. if you were to use mummy bags, you could combine the two, but that would look kind of wierd with the two foot sections being seperate. Not only that, you would have to use two bags with the same zippers and the same length, otherwise it wouldn't zip together right.

There are some companies that make pairs of sleeping bags for the purpose of using them together. They are designed where one bag is slightly shorter than the other so that the bottom bag will have a place for you head without getting it onto the ground.

Both bags would have to be the same make and model #
The zippers have to be the same.
It would be like zipping a winter coat to a sweatshirt (no can do).
Go into any outdoors store and ask a salesman about zipping 2 bags together. Ask if there's a difference between L&R zippered bags.

They're made that way so you can zip two bags together so you can sleep with another person. I don't know how to tell the difference but make a quick email or phone call to the following place and they will tell you.

One thing to keep in mind is they must be identical brands and models or it won't work. Some bags can be zipped together and they don't have to be labeled right or left, they're universal.

you can't just flip mummy bags over they have a head opening that encloses most of your head except the face, you can't flip these over

the only ones you could flip over are the rectangular style sleeping bags

ex this style can be flipped over:

I agree with you unless it is a mummy bag. Then there is a definite top and bottom!
