I'd like to try and recreate a "Cream Cheese Wonton" recipe from a chinese restaurant chain called Pick Up Stix.

I've tried to locate wonton wrappers at my nearest grocery store (Safeway), but haven't found them. Do any supermarket chains carry these? Or do I need to go to a specialty foods store or an asian market? I'm in Sacramento, California, so if anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Also, does anyone have a good recipe for cream cheese wontons (a seafood-free version)? The only ingredients that I know are in the Pick Up Stix ones are wonton wrappers, cream cheese, and minced water chestnuts.

Thanks in advance to all the replies :)

How funny, my kids love those! Just had them the other day, they are good!

I have seen wonton skins everywhere: albertsons, safeway....they are widely & easily available. Try an Asian market or speciality grocery store.

Apparently this is it!

Ingredients:

***Filling:***
4 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
1 egg yolk
1/2 can of water chestnuts, drained and minced
finely chopped green onions
salt & pepper to taste
wonton skins

Directions:

Mash cream cheese in a bowl with fork until smooth. Add the egg yolk, salt, pepper, water chestnuts and green onions; mix until completely lump-free; set aside. If time allows, refrigerate for 2 hours for easier handling.

Using store-bought wonton wrappers or your own, place a teaspoon of cream cheese mixture on a wrapper. Gather up the edges; pinch to enclose. Set on cookie sheet; repeat with remainder. Heat 4 to 5 cups oil in wok or skillet to 350 degrees; fry 5 or 6 wontons at a time for 3 to 4 seconds or until light golden brown. They will puff up, so don't fry too many at once. Remove and drain on wire rack or paper toweling. Serve with warm dipping sauce.

As far as finding the wrappers, most larger chain grocery stores carry them these days. As others have said, look in the produce section. Sometimes they can be hard to find and their location is not exactly intuitive. You may have to ask, but they probably have them. There probably no other ingredients other than those that you listed. Wontons are often very simple in terms of ingredients. If you want to mix it up a bit, try adding a little ground sausage (I use Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage) mixed with cream cheese or Chopped Spinach mixed with cream cheese as a filler. Whatever you use, make sure that your ingredients are fully cooked before making the wontons. Simply add a teaspoon or so of the filling (for small wrappers) and seal the edges (I use butter, some use egg or eve water). Use a little sweet and sour or soy sauce for dipping. Good stuff.

well i live in cali too and we usually get our wonton wrappers from any local asian supermarkets.
i prefer the medium thickness ones since if it's too thick, then it won't cook as easily and if it's too thin, it will break.

i usually have cream cheese wontons as a dessert with cream cheese and like a favorite jam or jelly in the middle and then we deep fry it for like a couple seconds until the skin is cooked.

i hope this helps!

I have gotten a thin dough from Kroger's my local grocery store....but I am sure if you had a ethnic, or family owned store if you ask for a dough that can be used to make wontons they will have something. Pillsbury was the band I ended up getting...I do not remember the type...and there were really good! Or Asian refrigerated section...

I would just ask. There are usually in the fridge or freezer section!

Good luck...

Most supermarkets do carry them. They might be in a refrigerated area of the produce department - check near the tofu and other Asian items.
