It is not mandatory to have a cake at a brunch bridal shower. However ..it can be substituted with a tiered chocolate fountain instead with fresh fruit and dipping items on side.
I think guest expect something unusual at these events to make it memorable and not just a brunch. After all you want these same people to come back for the big wedding!

That is a lot of weight gain there and everyone is going to be eating cake and other sweets at the wedding too. Ask your friends if perhaps a fruit tray or a less elaborate dessert would be just the thing needed for the brunch that way everyone is not over indulging packing on weight before the big day.

Even though it is a late Brunch, I would agree that there should be a dessert. When the gifts are being opened, usually guests are enjoying a nice dessert and coffee or other refreshments and even participating in Bridal Games.
I would advise something light. Maybe a Pound Cake with fresh fruit topping or a Tiramisu Cake....simple yet DELICIOUS!

Bridal showers are mostly for women only. most women like cheese cake. You could have a sample platter of a variety of cheese cakes. Most bakery's are happy to accommodate ( try chocolate/strawberry swirl/Oreo/) or another option on the cake thing is petite fours. A cake that is topped with a melted candy and decorated. Can be a variety of cake/candy/decor.

I recently attended a shower and the dessert was homemade tiramisu. Although cake is traditional, its not necessary, especially if the guest of honor has another favorite! Instead of cake, how about gourmet cupcakes? You can make them in just about any flavor and fill them with cream, custard, cream cheese and the likes before frosting and decorating them. Good luck!

I don't think it's necessary either, but if the other host really wants it, why not? It's not really worth an argument or bad feelings. If she really wants a cake, then tell her in the nicest possible way, that now you get to choose something you want.

Just get cake, it is not going to hurt anything, if you are really concerned with having cake, angel food cake or mini cup cakes would be appropriate for the occasion.
