I've been coughing up clear flem during the morning for a few months. I am a smoker (trying to quit). Today when I coughed it up there was a very small spot of blood in it. What's going on? I'm scared! Other than the flem, I feel like I'm in good health- I don't have trouble breathing unless my allergies are acting up, no fever, no sore throat, etc.

Yes I do smoke menthol ciggs.
And, oh...yes, I did eat food with red spices last night, but it looked like blood. Thank you for calming me down everyone...I'm going to buy some quit lozengers today. Hopefully that helps me kick this nasty habit.

You're coughing up phlegm because the chemicals in cigarettes paralyze the cilli in your respiratiry passages. These are little "fingers" that keep mucous from getting into your lungs. You may find that your cough actually gets worse when you first quit smoking. This is becasue you body is beginning to repair itself. The blood you coughed up may have been because you've been coughing so much that you throat is very irritated. If it was just a small amount, and bright red that is the most likely cause. But I would still suggest that you see a doctor to make sure everything is okay. Also because there are many smoking cessation aids available which can help you be successful and make quitting less stressful!
Good Luck!!!

You could go see the doctor. That would make it the easiest. Clear flem is fine. Is it everyday you do this? I tend to cough some up in the morning. It's become a habit and honestly my throat feels thick if I don't.
And are you positive it is blood? Did you possibly eat something red the day before or earlier? Ketchup, hotsauce, red dye... they can spot the flem that's in your throat. I've had that happen.

I agree with "gracie63"!!! A bit of advice that may help with the phlegm situation...try to not smoke at least an hour before you got to bed and an hour after you wake up, if you're not doing this already. Give your lungs time to breath some fresh air before smoking. It won't take care of it totally but it might cut down on how much phlegm you are producing. And a little insight about quiting...while quiting you are going to find that because your body going through the repair process that you are going to cough up more phlegm that would show up kind of dark even black at times. Don't worry it's just all those years of putting your lungs through all the harsh chemicals and tar at that matter. I'm a smoker still but my old boss was a smoker. While I was still working for him, he decided to just quit cold turkey. That's where I noticed that he started coughing up black phlegm and his body was getting rid of all the toxins. Well good luck and take care!!!

Well as a fellow smoker I can tell you that it's normal! If you smoke menthol that's where the blood is coming from because all menthol cigs have fiberglass in it.I used to smoke those then switched to regular which totally sucks so I am just trying to just quit altogether now!Now before I get a million thumbs down when i say its normal,I don't mean that
it's ok.We all know that smoking is bad but as a smoker its normal to cough up phlegm.Anyway Good luck with quitting hon!

You should go to the doctor. A cough with phlegm can be the result of croup, an upper respiratory infection, a sinus infection (drainage), even TB and pneumonia. Make an appointment soon to go to the doctor. If you start coughing up blood or bloody phlegm, go to the emergency room.

While I was reading your question, I was thinking allergies especially in the morning and your phlegm is clear. Also, it could be the way you sleep - if you snore.
However, blood in the phlegm has me thinking that you need to keep an eye on it. The blood can be nothing, but if you continue to see more blood, then I think it warrants a talk with a doctor.

well if the blood was pink or bright red. you tore your throat from the coughing. I do it all the time. If it was a darker or brownish then its from your lungs.

It's "phlegm," and you almost certainly have bronchitis, normal for smokers.
