what does it mean if my VLDL is 8. The normal range given by the lab is 10-130. Can you have VLDL that is too low? Or is the lower the better?

Your VLDL is actually your tryglyceride count. When calculating your total cholesterol, they will take the tryglyceride count and divide it by 5 to determine the tryglyceride count to be included in your total cholesterol count. This would mean that your triglyceride count was actually 40, divided by 5 is how they came up with the number 8. And no, I would not be concerned if your trigyceride count is considered a bit lower than normal, as triglycerides are is simply a fancy word for measuring the fat molecules in your blood, so the less the better, much like your LDL (bad cholesterol) numbers. I would venture to say that with your VLDL so low that your total cholesterol is also very low. If so, good for you!

You're showing some classic signs of a metabolic disorder - high triglycerides, high VLDL, low HDL. Do you also have high blood pressure and belly fat that won't seem to go away? I am a Type 2 diabetic with metabolic disorder. I dropped my triglycerides below 100 simply by low carbing, like Tabea. I cut out grains, rice, corn, potatoes, sugar, and most fruit. My triglycerides were 70 at my last lab, down from 115. My VLDL was 14. Triglycerides and HDL are incredibly important measures of heart health. Your triglyceride:HDL ratio should be <2. Yours is 21. Again, to quote Tabea, you really are a ticking time bomb. So, what can you do? First, low carb - today. That'll have a quick and profound effect on your triglycerides. Second, take omega-3 fish oil. Make sure that the fish oil has a high ratio of omega-3s. Some inferior brands are largely fish oil without high omega-3 content. My doctor recommended about 4 grams of omega-3, not fish oil, per day. Third, exercise. Exercise can dramatically raise HDL. Almonds, pistachios, and other nuts are supposed to help raise HDL, but eat them in moderation because they are carby in large quantities. About two ounces per day will do the trick.

Various labs have their own standards. One example is given below.
VLDL, very low density lipoproteins. The typical range is from zero to 40 mg/dl. The link between VLDL and heart disease risk is less well established.
VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) is another carrier of fat in the blood.
It is better to have a low VLDL as it reduces risk heart diseases by 500%. So be happy and enjoy life as it is on lower side.

but try to exercise & quit smoking
avoid cholesterol in diet
