Yesterday I saw my dog scratching and i think he might have fleas. I'm a vegetarian and I'm not sure how I feel about them. I'm probably going to get some flea repellent stuff but how do other veggies feel about fleas?

Well I actually don't see anything wrong with killing insects or fleas for that matter. I don't understand how people can compare slaughterhouses to killing a few bugs. Slaughterhouses breed animals, contain animals in small cramped places, treat them inhumanely, then also take their short life in a sometimes not so quick way. That's nothing like killing a bug. I don't breed, torture, etc to bugs. I just kill it in the fastest possible way. Not all bugs either, just ones that are pest like flees, roaches, and fire ants. But that's all just my opinion.

I use flea control on my dog. To be honest, I'd feel bad if I didn't because then it's kind of like you're torturing the dog really since you can help it but are choosing not to.

Severe flea infestations can kill an animal (they call it flea anemia)... so by all means... get rid of the fleas. I used to use Advantage, but didn't like putting pesticide on my pets. I picked up some yeast & garlic tablets from this really cool "pet health food" store. They seem to be working... nobody is scratching hardly at all anymore (which is more than I can say for Advantage... I think the fleas were becomming immune to it). The garlic & yeast makes the dogs unappealling to fleas... doesn't actually kill them I don't think. They just don't like the taste of the dogs' blood/skin oils due to the garlic/yeast, so they leave. Probably won't help fast enough if it's already got 'em bad... but it seems to be working great as a preventative. This is the first summer I haven't had a major flea problem (I have 3 dogs & 5 cats).

I also swat flies in the house (though I try to just keep them out to begin with, but a few always get in) and occasionally kill spiders... though I try to put them outside instead since at least spiders serve a purpose. I will kill a mosquito on sight.

If we didn't kill at least some bugs, I don't think we'd live in very healthy conditions.

I'm not a vegetarian anymore, but I was for 8 years. I also work in the vet field. All I can say is that get some Frontline and get rid of the fleas! A flea infestation will cause problems, trust me on this. They cause illness, spread disease, and are generally gross! I can also assure you that you won't be batting an eye at killing them when the infestation gets really bad and the fleas start biting you.

If I'd tried everything, and my dog was suffering, then I'd have to use something to nuke the fleas or some non-natural repellant. Actually I have almost been at that stage once or twice, but the seasons changed and the flea problem abated. If you're in the US, winter is on the way. Have you tried feeding garlic to your dog? Some dogs don't cope with it though, so go slow to start. My dogs are fine with it and are never troubled by fleas. Just with a little bit chopped up in their dinner on a regular basis.

I'm vegetarian and I have a dog. My dog hasn't had fleas for years, but I would use something to get rid of them if she did.

I'd rather do without the killing, but sometimes it's almost impossible.

There's a product called diazanon, under the brand name of Precor. It gets rid of fleas for good and doesn't even kill them. It keeps them from turning into adults from the larval stage and they stop laying eggs. After they life out their normal lifespan, all the fleas are gone. You'll have to use it a few times to make sure you get all the fleas that have already hatched.

We have 10 dogs and a rabbit and use Advantage once a month on all. We have not seen any fleas on any of the dogs or on the rabbit because we PREVENT them. If they were in the house, I would have to vacuum them up and empty the vacuum outdoors.

I found a black widow spider in my newspaper box last month. I didn't know what to do with her. I caught her in a plastic box with a lid and contacted several science and nature study businesses around us, even a marine science center to see if any of them could use her in an exibit. She was beautiful, healthy and large. I fed her leaves with bugs on them and kept her for a week. When I could not find a home for her, I took her to the back of my property and let her go into the woods. I could not even kill her. She was the most perfect specimen, but I couldn't do harm to her for just being born a black widow. She taught me a lot about how far I have come on my journey. I hope she appreciated me and doesn't come back!

Everyone is on their own path and has to do what they have to do. I don't judge you for killing a flea. Don't judge me for saving a spider.

I never kill ants or flies on purpose. If they are in my apartment, I find what is attracting them or letting them in and remove/close it.

Fleas, ticks, worms, mosquitoes are parasites. They have no purpose on the planet other than to spread disease and cause illness. If someone openly expresses sympathy for parasites, they need to never associate themselves with veg*nism because that is just retarded.

Use Advantage monthly, even if one flea lands on a pet, they may eat it and could get tape/round worms

When one living organism compromises the health of my pet, all bets are off for me. I will treat the problem as aggressively as possible.
Fleas can also be a nuisance to humans too, so I would also be protecting my household too.

I try not to even kill spiders when I see them in my bedroom (my husband removesin to the outdoors for me)... as for fleas, I put a flea collar on our dog, and if that kills the fleas, well... its protection for my dog, the fleas killed themselves if they want to try and feed off my baby, I don't just kill a flea I see on the groud or something, but if they attack my dog, its their fault. ^^ hope that helped
