In the early seventies, he wrote a book called "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" about eating wild plants.
Then he was on a commercial for Grape Nuts cereal. He had a line "Ever eat a pine tree? Well, some parts are edible."
A lot people starting joking about it. Johnny Carson was the host of the Tonight Show, and for quite some time, he had a joke about Euell Gibbons every night.
I don't think he was a vegetarian though. If I remember right, I heard him say he ate hamburgers and so on while he was on the Tonight Show or some other talk show.

Euel Gibbons was famous as a naturalist and wilderness survival. He had a special skill and remarkable knowledge of foods/medicinal aids available in the wild and how to use and prepare them. He did make use of shellfish (crabs, clams, mussels etc.) and other ocean wildlife. I have admired him for over 35 years and often made use of his remedies and meal recipes when camping out or just hiking around, as well as utilizing some found outside the house or along the roadside. He died in December 1975 at age 64.

He was known for introducing the world to natural wild foods. He was an author and appeared on Johnny Carson and Sonny and Cher to help spread the word on natural foods. Unfortunately, all that natural eating did not prolong his life. He died at the young age of 64. He was a great pioneer in this field.

He's the one who did the Grape Nuts commercial way back in the day. I also remember something along the lines of him taking a bite out of a newspaper. I think he was trying to make a point about the importance of fiber in one's diet. lol
