I was recently diagnosed with type two diabetes . I am taking a pill for it twice a day but having a terrible time .My docter did not tell me much . I am going to a support group in August but I am so depressed . I feel like my life is over . I can't eat anything I like and it feels like all I do is think about food and test my blood now . Are there any sweets or ice cream that I can eat ? If I eat one bagel or bowl of ice cream my sugar level goes sky high . I am sick of veggies . What should I do ?

Don't worry sweetie, it does get easier. When I was first diagnosed I was so depressed. I even went as far as telling my husband he didn't sign on for a sick wife and he should leave me. Needless to say I have a wonderful hubby who is very supportive. Plus my doctor told me I was to sick at the moment to start thinking about having children something I have always wanted.

I joined the gym. I thought I would walk in there and everyone would stare at me because I was so big. That wasn't the case. It was slow going at first but I really wanted babies and I found it easier to just go on the treadmill and watch my soaps ever day. I don't run a marathon like some of the people in the gym but I do a nice steady walk. I've currently lost over 70 pounds.

Now, about sweets....Oh boy do I love eating sweets. And just because you are diabetic doesn't mean you can't. I bet you don't even realise yet how many indulgences there are for diabetics. Everywhere from Wal-Mart to your local grocery store have sugar free things you just have to take extra care to look for them. They have things from sugar free peanut butter and strawberry jelly to cupcakes and cookies that are sugar free.

Edy's makes a really low sugar ice cream...any kind you like...vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate chip...all kinds...as does Blue Bunny. They have sugar free Popsicles, and sugar free candy (I LOVE Dove chocolate chocolate truffles. Good stuff there!)

Water is important too. I gave up all soda, unless I am out to dinner than I usually have a Diet Coke or an unsweetened iced tea with Equal or Splenda.

Also, you do not have to only eat veggies. Your body does need carbs and protein. You should work out a menu with your doctor or a dietitian. I usually eat whatever I want to except in smaller doses (everything except sweets that is...unless they are sugar free)

Your life is not over. It will take some getting used to but it is doable. There are alot of people to talk to about it that can help. Actually Yahoo chat has a Diabetes room that I go to alot. The people there are very supportive and will answer any questions you can think of.

The best thing to remember is this....take it slow...I know it can seem very overwhelming, but it will become easier. If you need anything, some advice or guidance please let me know.

Check and see if there is a chapter of the American Diabetic Association in your area. Call or write them. They can send you some food guides and also refer you to a hospital-based dietician. I'm Type II. I eat "no sugar added" ice cream all the time. I also munch on sugar-free cookies and pastries. In fact, I make my own sugar free cinnamon buns in my oven. Takes about 15 minutes and the icing is yummy.
What you have to learn to do is read food labels. Especially the sugar and carbohydrate contents. The carbs are just as deadly as the sugars. Your comment about the doctor is rather curious. You need to be under the care of an endocronologist. That's one who specializes in treating diabetics. If your current doctor is an endocronologist, then get a different one.
I take one pill every day to stabilize my blood glucose. and I also take a different pill with each meal. No insulin. No "starvation diet". But, I do eat three meals a day and a snack before bedtime. Sometimes I also have a late afternoon snack. Love those "no sugar added" puddings like Tapioca and Rice that come in little cups. Also have a thing for these whole wheat crackers with cheddar cheese in the middle.
Your life isn't over. But, you are entering into a phase of your life that requires discipline in your eating habits and almost obsessive dedication to testing your blood sugar often.

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. My husband is a type two diabetic and he was the same way when he was diagnosed. I found a really good line of candy made by Hershey that is sugar free and still tastes really good so he can have a treat. Also, Klondike makes some really good sugar free ice cream bars you can have for a treat as well.

Try sugar free fudge-cicles, or any low carb or sugar free desserts at the grocery store.

My mom has type 2 diabetes- and she still enjoys desserts, you just have to be careful about carbs and sugar. From what I hear from her- the key is balance.

A lot of "sugar-free" products (not only make you extremely gassy) but are loaded with carbs.

Also, try searching for some diabetic recipes online. Don't worry- it takes some getting used to, but think of how much better off you'll be once you get your blood sugar under control! There is hope also, with diet- my mom got down to 5.8 (which is just under borderline). You can do it too!

I know it's rough but it does get better, really! Things fall into a routine and it gets much easier on a daily basis. Bagels are really dense, and many people can't handle them, but maybe something like a whole wheat english muffin with a little cream cheese may satisfy your craving. Blue Bunny makes sugar free frozen treats of all kinds- see if they carry them in your area. I like that they are individual servings, so it makes it easy to eat just one portion size, instead of dishing out a bowl and not taking too much. Freeze grapes, pineapple and watermelon, and that can be a dessert, or even breakfast. You have to improvise and have patience to figure out what works. Good luck!

remember this can be reversed i was feeling the same way and got to a point were i was completely off the meds so there is hope

I also found a book called:
Fix-It and Forget-It Diabetic Cookbook
By Phyllis Pellman Good

It has tons of recipes and a 7 day dietary plan using these recipes it helped me and I think it can help you

watch out for sugar free snacks and candies they have a substitute that can cause a laxative affect (read the label before you buy it they will have a warning label to that effect)
