Snoring is not a disease but a disorder. Often called sleep apnea. This is real bad becasue you actually stop breathing and can wake up hundreds of times during the night Treatment includes surgery to loosen the back of the throat. or the use of a CPAP Machine something positive air pressure which essentially blows air up your nose so you don't snore. Not as hard to get used to as you might imagine. After introduction of this therapy you sleep like nobodies business. It is truly amazing how refreshed your are

Snoring isn't a disease. It is a relaxation of the muscles in the throat that cause the throat to narrow a bit. So when air comes through that narrowed passageway, noise is made and that is snoring...excessive snoring and or loud, honking snoring (where the whole neighborhood can hear you, or people compare your snoring to a chainsaw). Could be caused by the flaps at the end of your nasal cavity making the noise (try breathing out of your nose instead of both your nose and mouth at the same time). It could be a sign of Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is caused by the muscles that relax so much that it cuts off air supply so that a person stops breathing several times a night (only like 30-60 seconds) and then wakes up enough to breathe again. The only thing that can be done for this is called a CPAP. It is a negative pressure machine that keeps the airway open while you sleep and can completely reverse any signs of sleep apnea. It looks kind of sci fi, but it is proven to help.

I've read everyone Else's answers, and while fairly informative, each and everyone failed to mention the relaxation of the tongue which can fall back into the orophayanx and occlude the airway. This along with a weak upper palate fluctuating will cause snoring on inhalation and full occlusion causes the typical snork and wake syndrome. I'm sorry but have the nursing and respiratory schools stopped teaching properly or are you people asleep in class due to your own apneustic events. While not all snoring requires treatment. Loud snoring can be treated with breathrite nasal strips. These strips open the nares and give an alternate route for the air to travel. Most recently is the advent of sleep medicine and the promotion of Cpap/Bipap machines that give a set level of positive pressure to the airways and 'splint' open the airways thereby aliviating the snoring. There are also oral appliances that your dentists can fit you with but the report that I get from my patients is that they are uncomfortable and then they don't wear them. Snoring can lead to many other health problems and thus may lead to diseases though it may or may not be classified as disease. Excessive snoring can affect the quality of the sleep of the sufferer, may obstruct breathing etc.
Sleep apneia (spelling may be a little off, forgive) is associated with snoring and may cause heart arrest and other serious health problems. Needs to be treated.
Surgery has helped some. Tying up the head so that one doesn't open one's mouth is another option.

Snoring not a disease. Now wife been snoring so bad loud she went to the doc and had a sleep disorder test done which revealed ( sleep apnea) . She was directed to use a cpap machine which she uses nightly. since using it, she does not snore, and stated she awakens more refreshed than before.So many die in their sleep caused by snoring, I know, she had stopped breathing approx 4 times before she used the cpap machine Good luck

Here are some tips to help you and your bedmate to somehow get rid of snoring.
First,
sleep on your side. Your sleeping position is one of the factors that cause snoring. Sleeping on your back will produce snoring and it will help to get rid of snoring if you sleep on your side. In order to maintain that position, Westbrook suggests putting any hard material; it can be a small ball or marbles, anything that will make sleeping on your back uncomfortable.
Second,
avoid alcohol and tranquilizers. alcohol and sleeping pills can depress your central nervous system and relax the muscle of your throat and jaw, making snoring more likely".
Third
lose weight. It was said that an extra weight especially around the neck puts a pressure on the airway and causes it to somehow collapse. So a healthy diet may be necessary to help get rid of snoring.
Fourth,
stop smoking. If you are a smoker, it is better to quit because according to Westbrook, smoking can be very irritating to the lining of the upper airway, including the nose." You will not only get rid of snoring, but it will be also good for your health.
Fifth,
elevate your head. One way to get rid of snoring doing this, is putting pillows under neck until you get to a sitting-like position. Because Sleeping with your head raised may take some of the pressure off the airway, making breathing easier."
Sixth,
keep regular schedule. Sleep deprivation also increases the volume of snoring." Maintain a regular sleep schedule, as much as possible sleep enough hours. Dozing off during the day may be an indicator that you're not getting enough sleep. Taking a nap on your free time may help to get rid of snoring problem.

Snoring can be caused by an obstuction in the airways (either nasally or in the throat). Try nasal "breathe right" strips to help open up the passageways. Snoring can also be a sign of sleep apnea, so if the snoring continues then visit your doctor.

Snoring is not a disease but usually means something is going on. You need to see your doc and ask for a sleep study. If the sleep study doesn't find the cause then the doc will advise you what to do next.

snoring happens because the soft palate relaxes and falls across the airway creating a partial obstruction. There are several medical treatments for this, and you need to discuss a sleep study with your doctor to find out which treatment will work best for you.

Snoring is not a disease but a postural disorder, prop per placement of pillows can considerably reduce it, the biggest disadvantage is that it leads to sleep Apnoea where the breathing stops for a while, this happens several times and can lead to sleep disorders, mid morning slackness, high blood pressure, obesity and heart attack (Highest no of sudden heart attacks between 1AM and and 9 Am).
Breathing pumps and Snnoozers are available on medical advice but the best method is to undergo breathing exercises in supervision.
